MIAKAs
Would a gay student fare better at a majority white university or a historically black one? You don't have to be gay, black or white to figure out the answer to that one. Hyper-traditional and often religiously conservative, HBCUs, according to a recent Associated Press story, don't provide the open atmosphere that would make a gay student, particularly one still coming to grips with his or her sexuality, feel either welcome or comfortable.

At private black schools, like Hampton University in Virginia, gay students are still struggling for their administrations to approve a gay student group and most gay students are still closeted. This story should have mentioned the recent uproar over a group of gay males from Texas Southern University forming an offshoot chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, called MIAKA's. A BET.com article about the subject gets to the root of the issue.

As the debate raged, one thing became clear: The controversy was less about the sanctity of AKA and more about homophobia. A self-proclaimed Omega Psi Phi member posted, “I can care less about being politically correct. Homosexuality is wrong and it is tolerated too much, especially on our Black campuses.” One AKA proclaimed, “God is not pleased with this.” Others called it “sick.”

With attitudes like these from some students at black colleges, one wonders if there is much incentive for administrators to develop programs for gay students. Then again, it's unfair to blame the students and staff at black colleges for a problem seen everywhere else, most pervasively in professional sports and hip hop.

Barring skipping out on an all-black education, which is an undesirable notion for some and an impossibility for others, the only viable solution may also seem either undesirable or impossible. Unfortunately, the only people who are going to force change on a campus that is completely resistant to it are the gay students themselves. [Source, Source]
