» Bob Jones Atones for Sins

"Bob Jones University of Greenville, South Carolina, issued an online statement Thursday apologizing for 'racially hurtful' practices of its past, including prohibiting married African American students until 1971 and unmarried African American students until 1975, and banning interracial dating until 2000. The letter stated that BJU’s former policies were 'shaped more directly by that [segregationist] ethos than by the principles and precepts of the Scriptures.' 'In so doing,' the letter said, 'we failed to accurately represent the Lord and to fulfill the commandment to love others as ourselves. For these failures we are profoundly sorry.'"

» Eventually, Everyone Will Look Like Obama

"…the human race is in the midst of a great averaging; and the future, more than likely, is brown. … All geneticists are firm believers in the healing power of lust; in the ability of desire to overcome social and geographic barriers. In 2001 about one British marriage in 50 – a quarter of a million in total, with many more couples cohabiting – was between partners from different ethnic groups. … Such relationships are not, as often believed, to be found just among the poor, for more than half of these couples live in the suburbs and are richer and more educated than average. … Obama has talked at length about the economy, about Main Street versus Wall Street and those with power versus those without. As politicians always do, he promises his country a better future – and he may succeed. To biologists, though, he is living proof that the future is almost here: a future that will look more or less like him."

Oops, I mean Top 10 Reasons Why Some Black Men Don't Date Black Women

blackwomen.jpg Here at Stereohyped, we've discussed interracial relationships ad infinitum. The general consensus seems to be that most of us believe it to be a non-issue, and many of us are currently in loving relationships with someone of a different race. But it also seemed to be the consensus that people who seek out interracial relationships based solely on stereotypes and prejudices have some major problems they need to work out. Say, for instance, black men who proudly say they don't date black women because we're bossy, have bad attitudes, are independent-minded, etc. It's insulting to both the women they're refusing to date and the women that they do date. Stereotypes all around. Here's a prime example. WAOD points us in the direction of an uber-scientific survey about why some black men avoid black women like the plague. It was conducted by an actual PhD candidate at Black State. Did I mention that it's all the black woman's fault?

loving.jpgMildred Loving, a conveniently named black woman from Virginia, became well-known around 1967 when she and her white husband inspired a Supreme Court ruling that nullified Virginia's ban on interracial marriage and effectively struck down similar laws nation-wide. The anniversary of the ruling, June 12th, is known as "Loving Day." Sadly, Loving died Friday at the age of 68. Her husband* died in 1975. [AP]

davidtuason.jpgDavid Tuason, the insane, delusional man who for two decades has dedicated himself to harassing prominent black men who date or are married to white woman, pleaded not guilty in federal court in Cleveland yesterday. The judge ordered him held without bond.

Tuason, who is Filipino-American, is 46, lives with his mom and dad, and is probably just projecting because he can't get white women to come sleep with him at his parents' house. He's charged with harassing professional athletes, high school students, and even Clarence Thomas, who Tuason thinks should be "castrated, shot or set on fire." Maybe. But not because he's married to a white woman! [MSNBC]

Is intolerance of interracial relationships the theme of the month? Check out the new trailer for the Samuel L. Jackson and Kerry Washington thriller, Lakeview Terrace, about a cop who doesn't like it when a black woman and her white husband move into the neighborhood. As much as I love Kerry W., I think I'll probably wait until this comes on HBO.

clarencethomas.jpgAn insane man with too much time on his hands and too much hate in his heart was just arrested in Cleveland for harassing prominent black males known to associate with white women and sometimes the children of mixed race couples.*

The federal indictment doesn't name names but indicates that the man, David Tuason, threatened "an associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, athletes and entertainers." We all know who that Supreme Court Justice was. He usually threatened to blow up the building where the victim was located. The man is now behind bars, but I wonder if I should submit this to the feds as evidence? [UPI]

"Does Your Wife Know You're Driving Her Car?"

foxy.jpg"The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly," is a series in which we highlight your stories — be they good, bad, or ugly — about being black in America. We all have different experiences, but you can bet there is always someone out there who can relate to your stories. Reader K.A. sent in an account of a ridiculous encounter with police, something to which many blacks can relate. Have a similar tale? Would you like to share and/or vent about a moment when you've been proud, delighted, ashamed, or discriminated against based on your race? Send it to lauren@stereohyped.com with the subject "Good Bad Ugly." And I welcome the good stories! There's so much ugly in the world.

My husband and I were driving out of a suburban shopping area at about 7 at night. We were in my car, which was a mid sized sedan. Neither of us has anything on our driving records in the last 16 years. He's white. I'm black. He's driving.

We notice when we get in the car at the store, that one of the headlights has burned out. We get on the freeway and two miles in, we get pulled over by a county sheriff. The deputy looks in the car and asks for my husband's license. We ask why he's stopped us. He says because of the tail light. He asks who's car it is. My husband, says, "It's my wife's." (He's such a smart ass. He knows this fool won't figure it out.) The deputy says "Does she know that you have it?" He has now assumed that I am a hooker and my husband has picked me up some where for nefarious purposes. He asks for the registration. I reach directly in the glove box, and pull it out, without looking. I should add at this point that I have on a full length fox fur coat and my hair is fierce. Why does that matter? Cause I prosecuted almost every hooker in town and not one of them is remotely fierce. The cops know all the hookers.

black_and_white_in_color.jpgLadies, it's happened to most of us at one time or another. You're at a party, or a club, or a get together, and a guy catches your interest. Maybe you've just had a good conversation, and maybe you've just admired him from across the room. This dialogue with your girls ensues:

You: "Blank looks so good. Does he have a girlfriend?"

Friend: "No, but I heard he only dates white girls."

You, disappointed: "Ugh, really?

Other friend: "I could have told you that by looking at him."

If You Don't Know, Now You Know

interracialrelationships

This needs to end: "So you didn’t date any black girls?" Not since I've had a curfew have people been so concerned about with whom I spend my time.

I'm not going to rehash my sexual history with the Internet, as it's really not anyone's business, but I will say that most of the women with whom I've had relationships have been white. And here's why:

Black men were pissed when Rihanna said the hottest guy in the game was Paul Walker, but, according to the Associated Press, her comments were just indicative of a larger trend. Black women are no longer limiting themselves to a single race — something many black men stopped doing long ago.

They're taking cues from their favorite stars — from actress Shar Jackson to tennis pro Venus Williams — as well as support blogs, how-to books and interracially themed novels telling them it's OK to "date out."

It comes as statistics suggest American black women are among the least likely to marry.

"I'm not saying that white men are the answer to all our problems," Jones said. "I'm just saying that they offer a different solution."

She reflects many black women frustrated as the field of marriageable black men narrows: They're nearly seven times more likely to be incarcerated than white men and more than twice as likely to be unemployed.

Census data showed 117,000 black wife-white husband couples in 2006, up from 95,000 in 2000.

I'm not sure I like the implication that black women are driven out of desperation toward white men, since many women who could easily get a black man choose to simply date who they like. Still, you can't really argue with the fact that pickings are slim for black women seeking black men, depending on where they live and the type of man they're looking for. And you know what? Paul Walker does look good.

America Finally Approves of Interracial Couples. Well, Mostly.

interracial.jpg

  • Congratulations interracial couples! Eighty-three percent of Americans think that your love is "all right" with them, which, not to be a downer, means that a whopping 17 percent don't. In the year 2007. What progress! [Pew]
  • When we talk about blacks who are sell-outs, are we pointing fingers at the wrong people? [CST]
  • In a statement that will delight Latino baseball players, Gary Sheffield explained that blacks were phased out of America's favorite pastime in favor of Latinos because the latter group is easier to control. [ESPN]
  • Officials in major cities with traditionally strong black populations — Atlanta, DC and NYC — worry that they will lose their diversity to the suburbs because of high cost of living. [AJC]
  • Famed San Francisco jazz club decides to pull it's anniversary CD after it was discovered there were no black artists on it. More than half of the club's acts are black. Happy Black Music Month! [SFGate]
  • Look No Further Than The Craigslist Personals

    personalad.jpg
Do you ever get the sense that people from other races are attracted to you solely because of, rather than in spite of, your racial differences? Racialicious examined this troublesome exotification of blacks, Asians, and Latin Americans in personal ads on Craigslist. If a guy or a girl is looking to date you because of a vast generalization that he or she has made about your race, then it's probably not a great idea to respond to their ad (if you're into responding to personal ads, that is). Check out some examples of what to avoid after the jump.
