John McCain has been commended for that one day last week when he defended Barack Obama twice against claims that the Democratic candidate is scary, not-to-be trusted, and, of course, Arab. But missing in that defense that McCain so generously offered — after being attacked from all sides for his previous failure to do so — was that, in addition to the fact that Obama is neither Muslim nor Arab, Muslims and Arabs should not be feared and shunned. |

People who go on and on about how "crazy" Barack Obama supporters are have never seen footage of these nutjobs. You might be inclined to lump Chris Matthews in the same category, but probably for different reasons. |

» The Wisdom of the Aged
"Nigerian Mohammed Bello Abubakar, 84, has advised other men not to follow his example and marry 86 women. The former teacher and Muslim preacher, who lives in Niger State with his wives and at least 170 children, says he is able to cope only with the help of God." |
» 'Honor Killing' Comes Stateside
"No one knows just how many Muslim girls and women are murdered each year in the name of family 'honor,' since their deaths frequently go unreported and unpunished. The cases that do come to light are ghastly. Recently, the Saudi human rights activist Wajeha al-Huwaidar wrote a scathing essay characterizing honor killings as a scourge peculiar to the 'Greater Middle East,' with its entrenched culture of misogyny and male supremacy. … But while honor killings may be more prevalent in the Middle East, no longer are they unknown in the West. In the Atlanta suburb of Jonesboro last month, a Pakistani immigrant allegedly strangled his 25-year-old daughter with a bungee cord because she was determined to end her arranged marriage … In Upstate New York a few weeks earlier, Waheed Allah Mohammad, an immigrant from Afghanistan, was charged with attempted murder after repeatedly stabbing his 19-year-old sister. … she was a 'bad Muslim girl,' he told sheriff's investigators. On New Year's Day in Irving, Texas, the bullet-riddled bodies of the Said sisters - Sarah, 17, and Amina, 18 - were found in an abandoned taxi. Police issued an arrest warrant for their father, an Egyptian immigrant named Yaser Abdel Said, who had reportedly threatened to kill them upon learning that they had boyfriends." |

» No Hijabs At Abercrombie
From the AP: "A Muslim civil rights group has filed a federal complaint on behalf of a Muslim teenager who alleges she was denied a job at Abercrombie & Fitch because she wears a hijab, or head scarf. The complaint, filed at the Oklahoma City office of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, claims that a district manager for the clothing store at Woodland Hills Mall told the girl in late June that the head covering, worn by observant Muslim women, didn't fit the chain's image. 'Employers have a clear legal duty to accommodate the religious practices of their workers,' said Razi Hashmi, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations-Oklahoma, which helped the girl file the complaint. 'To deny someone employment because of apparent religious bias goes against long-standing American traditions of tolerance and inclusion.'" |
» Being Muslim a 'Smear' in America Today
"Vanessa Alikhan was at a Democratic 'unity party' when she overheard another guest indignantly refute the rumor that Barack Obama is Muslim, as if it were a racial slur. She later recounted the conversation to a friend. 'She told me that this is politics and that I should just deal with it," said Alikhan … 'To me this is the same as telling an African American or a Jewish person they should deal with discrimination because people aren't ready to embrace them as a group.' She and other American Muslims are speaking out, as the Obama campaign pushes back on widely e-mailed and patently false claims that he is tied to Islamic terrorists. The rumor could be particularly damaging in a must-win state like Florida, which has a large Jewish population. … While Muslim leaders understand the campaign's responsibility to counter misinformation, they say the classification of being Muslim as a 'smear' goes too far." |
![]() "Senator Obama is half African by birth and Africans can understandably identify with him. In Islam, however, there is no such thing as a half-Muslim. Like all monotheistic religions, Islam is an exclusive faith. As the son of the Muslim father, Senator Obama was born a Muslim under Muslim law as it is universally understood. It makes no difference that, as Senator Obama has written, his father said he renounced his religion… As most Americans understand it, Senator Obama is not a Muslim. He chose to become a Christian, and indeed has written convincingly to explain how he arrived at his choice and how important his Christian faith is to him. His conversion, however, was a crime in Muslim eyes; it is “irtidad” or “ridda,” usually translated from the Arabic as “apostasy,” but with connotations of rebellion and treason. Indeed, it is the worst of all crimes that a Muslim can commit… Most citizens of the Islamic world would be horrified by the fact of Senator Obama’s conversion to Christianity once it became widely known — as it would, no doubt, should he win the White House. This would compromise the ability of governments in Muslim nations to cooperate with the United States in the fight against terrorism." |

Inauspicious Beginnings
Two weeks after Hillary Clinton said in an interview that as President she would send America's military to "totally obliterate" Iran were the Muslim nation to attack Israel, an Iranian cleric has responded with his own threats of violence. Ahmed Khatami told a large crowd of followers Friday that he believes America is "fighting Islam," adding, "If the crazy people in Washington or Tel Aviv take any military action [against Iran], the Iranian nation will hit them with such a slap that they will not be able to get on their feet again." |

Home Is Where the Koran Is
More and more Muslims are turning to home schooling to educate their children, according to a piece in today's Times. In one school district in California, 40 percent of school-aged girls of Pakistani and Southeast Asian descent are taught at home. This exodus is partly due to disgust with American institutions — "Little girls are walking around dressing like hoochies, cursing and swearing and showing disrespect toward their elders" — and partly to fear of harassment — "We don’t want anyone to point a finger at us … to say that we are bad." Unfortunately, neither of those worries is unfounded; but is pulling their children out of school the most effective way for Muslim parents to alleviate those issues? We say no. Segregation, self-imposed or not, is terrible for diverse communities, especially when the culture being estranged is already considered by many to be insular and frightening. Besides, oftentimes struggle begets progress:
