» Congress Wants Bush To Pardon Jack Johnson
Jack Johnson, the barrier-busting black boxer who became the world heavyweight champion in 1908, might be catching a posthumous break from Congress. Lawmakers are urging the president to pardon Johnson, who spent a year in Leavenworth for transporting women across state lines for immoral purposes (read: messing with white women). "He was a victim of the times and we need to set the record straight — clear his name — and recognize him for his groundbreaking contribution to the sport of boxing," said Rep Peter King, R-N.Y., author of the resolution. John McCain authored a companion resolution for the Senate. [CNN] |
