» When Does Plain Old Theater Become "Black Theater?"

From the Guardian: "It's an interesting time for black theatre in London at the moment. Stop. Rewind. Is that actually a useful thing to say? This is the question posed by the playwright Bola Agbaje on the Facebook group for her Olivier Award-winning play Gone Too Far!, which returns to the Royal Court in July as part of its Upstairs Downstairs season. The discussion topic "If a black person produces something such as a play, a film or music should it be associated with the word black?" has received almost 4,000 words in reply, passionately arguing both for and against, while examining the wider issues that surround the question."

LONDON'S MAYOR HAS SOME TOLERANCE ISSUES? British singer Estelle could do without London's mayor, Boris Johnson. Apparently, he referred to black children as piccanninies in 2002. She told Attitude magazine, "Look at how ignorant [he] is and he's going to be running our city? Look at that. Let's think about that. Better the devil you know… He can get lost. He can take a flying leap."

The Grass Isn't Always Greener

A representative of the British National Party — a whites only, anti-Islam, anti-gay nationalistic political party — has won a seat in the London Assembly after receiving more than 5 percent of the constituency's vote. It's the first London Assembly seat ever won by a BNP representative.

Richard Barnbrook, the BNP member elected, immediately set the tone for his time in office in a press conference in which he railed against Muslim immigrants and gays: "You may have your religion behind your closed doors, but you don't bring it onto the streets. … You can be gay behind closed doors … but you don't bring it onto the streets, demanding more rights for it."

Two of the more detestable figures in American politics, Tom Delay and Al Sharpton, ran into each other recently in advance of their Nov. 7 debate in London — uh, I'm not even going to go there — and agreed that they have little in common. And I would have pegged them as kindred spirits.

Former House Majority leader Tom Delay strolled into the Grand Havana Club the other day and ran smack into the Rev. Al Sharpton, who is scheduled to debate the Texas Republican Nov. 7 in London, in an event sponsored by Oxford University. "He told me, 'You should be home preparing,' and said, 'I don't need that much preparation to take care of you.' We agreed that we don't agree on anything," said Sharpton. The Odd Couple - a white conservative from rural Texas and a black radical from Brooklyn - agreed only that they enjoy a good cigar.

Wait, Page Six! You forgot to add shameless self-promotion to the short list of things they have in common.

You know what they say — it's better to have rabid, out of control, sexually aggressive fans than no fans at all. Actually, they probably don't say that. But they should. Having lustful girls tackle you and rip your clothes off is a problem many 18-year-old boys probably wished they had, but many 18-year-old boys don't have it like Chris Brown, who experienced this very situation at a promotional event in London last week.

“It was pure pandemonium. I’ve been working here for a few years now and never before has any other celebrity drew this many people to the store”.

Because of time limits only a few of the hundreds of people who arrived could meet their idol and so afterwards Chris Brown did a walk around the store and then ran outside.

Things soon got tricky for the R&B crooner when fans descended on him from both sides of Oxford Street and tackled the star to the floor where they then began trying to strip his clothes off.

Brown managed to escape unharmed from the encounter (minus muddy clothes) and was quickly rushed back instore by his security where he had to wait until the police arrived to provide him with an escort.

Now he's set a precedent. Omarion and Bow Wow will probably get embarrassed next time they're across the pond and the fans just politely approach them and ask for autographs.
