British Photographer Nick Knight was mad as hell about the racism he saw in the fashion industry, and he wasn't going to take it anymore. So he enlisted enlisted Naomi Campbell and some prop (I hope!) guns to illustrate the frustration that he and black models feel every day in a silent short film. Campbell's wearing two dresses by Rodarte in the clip. Incidentally, Rodarte scored a big fat zero in Stereohyped's "Black Model Watch" from NYC's fall fashion week.

Naomi Campbell has been in the news for non-legal related reasons for the past few days, since she's been in Nigeria making appearances at hospitals and such. She tells the Daily Mirror that these are things that she does all the time, except… Well, let's let her tell it:

"I'm not a bad person. I'm blessed to be able to do charitable work and good things but no one focuses on that because I don't throw it in people's faces."

Some our most successful recording artists were in Lagos, Nigeria, over the weekend to perform at the ThisDay Africa Rising Festival. Rihanna and Jay were there, along with Mary J. Blige, Chris Brown, and Usher. On the fashion front, designer Ozwald Boateng and models Oluchi, Naomi Campbell, and Tyson Beckford were there. The latter two can also be seen below visiting the Lagos Island Maternity Hospital. Naomi is nice around babies.

Although the recent LeBron James Vogue cover didn't do so well on the stands for what, perhaps, are obvious reasons, there's a lot of speculation that the all-black issue of Vogue Italia will exceed money-making expectations. For one thing the issue — see sneak-peek pics* from Naomi Campbell's Vogue Italia spread above and below — has received international attention. For another thing, far more ads were sold for this special issue than normal. Sure, part of it is the novelty aspect. But it also dispels the myth that black models can't sell magazines or products.

“We’re all conditioned to see beauty,” [said model Veronica Webb], and the magazine, filled with photos of glamorous black models, “helps to condition people’s eyes. When you look at page after page after page of beautiful, gorgeous dark girls, you go, ‘Wow! Wow! Wow! I want some of that. How can I do it?’ ”

Webb noted that advertising in the special issue is up 30 percent over a normal edition. But, to underline the problem the industry has with diversity, nearly every one of the ads features white models.

Nelson Mandela might be turning 90, but he still keeps up with the news. That's why he has personally banned his (ex?) friend Naomi Campbell from making an appearance at his birthday bash. He didn't much like how she threw a temper tantrum at the airport, and he really didn't like that she was wearing a 46664 cap, representing Mandela's prison number and charity, when she did it.

"But people were disappointed by what happened - in the past she had spoken to Mandela about her anger - notwithstanding the fact that she was wearing the charity baseball cap when she was arrested. It's not the behaviour of a charity ambassador," said a source. "Mandela would have had a say. It's fair to say he was behind the decision. There's an aspect of him being upset by the whole situation. For the board of directors of his charity it's not the best role model for them to have."

Blackberries and spit will fly when Naomi hears this news. [PA]

British Airways has developed quite a nasty reputation as a result of several racially charged incidents. Naomi Campbell either knew about this reputation and chose to exploit it to make her airport temper tantrum seem less ridiculous or a BA employee on the plane really did call her a "Golliwog Supermodel", which doesn't actually explain why she then spit on some airport cops. Maybe she'll spend some time thinking that over during her court-ordered community service. But probably not.

NAOMI, SENTENCED. Beware, community. Naomi Campbell will be servicing you. The angry model was sentenced this afternoon to 200 hours of community service and a fine of $4,500 for spitting on cops and causing an unnecessary scene at Heathrow Airport earlier this year. Perhaps Vogue or Elle will get the opportunity to capitalize off of her bad behavior this time. W already got its chance.

As soon as Naomi Campbell has settled one case, it's time to plead guilty to another one. Such is life when you're an angry lunatic with a crippling sense of entitlement. She pleaded guilty this morning in London to "two counts of assaulting a police constable; one of using threatening, abusive words or behavior to cabin crew; and one of using insulting, abusive, threatening behavior or disorderly conduct likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress" — a result of her recent temper tantrum at the British Airways counter at Heathrow Airport.

There were originally six charges, but the Crown Prosecution Service generously decided not to pursue the last two. They said in a statement, "Ms. Campbell was aggressive, hostile and violent to people who were simply trying to do their jobs. Her behaviour fell far short of what is acceptable." She's supposed to be sentenced later today.

Naomi Campbell's agent surely has a nightmare job that few of us could imagine, but, still, she could probably do better than this. Here's the rep's two-pronged explanation for why a seemingly wasted-beyond-belief Campbell was snapped passed out in the middle of the street in Italy the other night.

“It was just a bit of fun and not down to drink. Naomi was playing this trust game, where you fall into a friend’s arms. It’s very hot there, so that could also have had something to do with it.”

True, heat and "trust games" are not a good mix. Especially when you throw in copious amounts of controlled substances.
