T.I. Stays On Top

ti_otc.jpg
T.I. reigns supreme on the Billboard charts this week, with his album selling 175,000 copies on top of the 468,000 he sold in his debut week. Last week's other chart topper, Kelly Rowland, sunk to No. 13, followed by T-Pain and Rihanna at Nos. 17 and 18. Check out the Billboard top ten after the jump.

Big Things Poppin'

T.I. has proven this week that his delusions of grandeur aren't so much delusions as valid feelings, hasn't he? His multiple personality disorder-inspired album, T.I. vs T.I.P. debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 after selling 468,000 in his opening week. Ms. Kelly (Rowland) didn't fare as well in her opening week, but with 82,000 sold and a No. 6 position on the charts, she did better than her solo debut in 2002, when her album, Simply Deep, peaked at No. 12. After the jump, the top 10.

Embarrassing

When a 14-year-old whose father is responsible for the "Achy Breaky Heart" debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard charts, all of the artists in her wake should be ashamed. Especially Kelly Clarkson.

Miley Cyrus and Kelly Clarkson's albums bumped any semblance of color out of the top 5 percent of the Billboard 200, but T-Pain was close behind at No. 11, followed by Rihanna at 14, R.Kelly at 15, and Fabolous at 17. More after the jump.

Lost Ones

chrisette.jpg
Chrisette Michele, the lovely crooner whose video I showed you a week ago, debuted way, way up the charts at No. 29. Blame Def Jam's promotion budget. Or just blame Jay-Z's inattentiveness.

Either way, Chrisette Michele did not even come close to knocking it out of the park with her debut CD, I Am. Instead, we have a bunch of the usual suspects in the top spots of the Billboard 200, including T-Pain at No. 10, Fabolous at No. 9, and the resilient (both of body and of record sales) Amy Winehouse. Check out the stats after the jump.

Bye bye, T-Pain. You too, Rihanna. There's a new chart topper in town, and his name is Toby Keith. Unfortunately for Fabolous, his album, From Nothin' to Somthin was released the same week as a country super star's, and he ended up debuting at number 2 on the Billboard 200 with 159,000 albums sold. T-Pain and Rihanna's reign at the top was short and sweet — they ended up at #5 and #7 respectively. Check out the rest of the top 10 here.

Painful Loss For Rihanna

tpain.jpg
She's an international superstar, but Rihanna still couldn't top T-Pain in her opening weekend.

Really? I guess a lot of shawtys are in the market for dranks these days. The Florida "singer" sold 171,000 to Rihanna's 162,000. Paul McCartney rounded out the top three to boot R.Kelly's invincible ass down to fourth place. Still, he sold 121,000. Check out the top 10 albums after the jump.

History Repeats Itself

doubleup.jpg
So I've been on a subtle anti-R.Kelly rampage over the last few weeks, although I have admitted in the past, and in this morning's Rewound, a grudging respect for his hit-making acumen. How else can I dislike him so strongly as a person yet know all the words to his songs??? Anyway, it doesn't matter what I (although I'm definitely not alone) think, 386,000 of you bought his record Double Up, helping him to easily slide into the number one spot on the Billboard 200…for the sixth time. Also representing (and/or appropriating) black music is Jeezy at #7 and Amy Winehouse at #6. Poor Ne-Yo had to say bye-bye to the Top 10. The full list is after the jump.

A TGT Appetizer

tank.jpg
Feeling like you're gonna die waiting for the R&B explosion that is TGT to take the stage this fall? Well, one-third of the self-styled supergroup released his album last week, and it debuted in second on the Billboard charts.

I couldn't sing you a Tank song that's not "I Deserve," but apparently the people behind TGT were onto something here with the Shirts Off Tour. The (initial) success of the album should drive up ticket sales, although Tyrese and Ginuwine are probably pissed that they didn't think of the album name Sex, Love & Pain first.

Ne-Yo Lives Up To His Proclamations of Greatness

Joe, who debuted in second place last week, is already gone from the Billboard charts. Akon's lengthy reign is over, too. It could either be related to his Trinidad scandal or the fact that a lot of new music came out last week, or both. But who needs Akon when there's Ne-yo? Ne-yo may be a bit egotistical, but simulating sex with 14 year olds isn't his style. Also, he actually possesses talent. He deserves to have his album, Because of You, debut at number 1, and I'm okay with him being the sole representation of black music on the top of the charts. Okay with it but kind of mystified. Has our reign over popular music come to an end?

Ain't Nothing Like A New Joe Album

Although Joe is complaining to AllHipHop in the above clip that mp3 downloading is hurting his pockets and lowering record sales, his new album, Ain't Nothing Like Me, managed to debut at number 2 (nobody's knocking over Avril Lavigne, apparently). Bringing some new (soulful) blood to the Billboard Top 10, Joe's only bedfellow is Akon, who wild horses couldn't drag off the top of the charts, no matter how annoying he is. And still, the hip hop backlash continues from last week. Could it be the March of Decency?

is hip hop feeling the pain?

timjustin.jpg
Looking at the Billboard's top 10 this week, I'm reminded that we're living in a country that popularly elected George W. Bush (the second time, at least).

Bucky Covington, Chris Daughtry, Tim McGraw, Martina McBride and Carrie Underwood are all crowding the top 10 with their American Idol resumes southern twangs. In other words, not too many brown faces on the Billboards this week, guys! Could it be that the perceived backlash against hip hop that we've been dealing with since the Don Imus scandal broke is, gulp, real? Actually, if that were the case, Akon would not still be secure at #6 in his 23rd week on the charts when all of Trinidad wants his head on a platter. Still, I wonder.

And then there's Timbaland's Shock Value at #10. When the hip hop haters get a load of this, Tim's ass will be grass. Once that happens, expect Justin Timberlake to gingerly remove himself from the situation and come away unscathed, wardrobe malfunction-style.
