Over For OJ

Wherein you, the readers, talk amongst yourselves.

So. O.J. Simpson. Going to jail… possibly for life. Did he get what was coming to him? Do you think it was possible for him to get a fair trial, given his history? Do you care?

Not Guilty

It was exactly 13 years ago that O.J. Simpson's "not-guilty verdict heard 'round the world" was read in court, closing the end of the "trial of the century." I was in gym class, and a classmate had brought in a transistor radio, which we all huddled around, to listen to the verdict. I guess even our teacher was curious, because she let the whole thing go down without anyone getting sent to the principal's office. Here we are more than a decade later. O.J. Simpson faced a judge again Friday, but the end result was different this time around.

Where were you?

There are pre-teens currently navigating the treacherous social landscape of middle school who were still in diapers on that fateful day more than a decade ago, when O.J. Simpson was acquitted of murdering Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman. Now, thirteen years to the day after that acquittal, the jury in Simpson's armed robbery and kidnapping trial will begin deliberations. Jurors were instructed to keep their focus on the current case, but is it possible for their minds not to wander back to that 13-year-old decision? He faces five years to life if convicted. [CNN]

UPDATE: O.J. Simpson was found guilty on all 12 counts of armed robbery and kidnapping. His co-defendant, Clarence "C.J." Stewart, was found guilty on the same counts. He could possibly spend the rest of his life in prison.

» OJ Gets All-White Jury In Kidnapping Case, Defense Charges Discrimination

From the Los Angeles Times: "Nine women and three men, none of them African American, were selected as jurors in O.J. Simpson's kidnapping and armed robbery trial Thursday, prompting the defense to complain of racial bias. Lawyers for Simpson and his codefendant, who is also black, charged that African Americans were being systematically excluded after the prosecution removed the lone black panelist who had been in contention for the jury… [Clark County District Judge Jackie Glass] rejected defense motions challenging the exclusion of the individual African Americans and another motion challenging the entire jury. 'There has been no evidence to me that the state has made a purposeful discriminatory effort to eliminate African American jurors,' the judge said, noting that two black alternates remain."

Arnelle Simpson gave her famous father OJ a beatdown in Florida yesterday, knocking him to the ground, cutting his head, and bloodying his lip. Apparently, Arnelle, 39, was angry because she doesn't like her dad's 32-year-old girlfriend. Arnelle felt bad and called 911, but whatever. He more than had it coming to him. [NYDN]

courtroom.jpgNow that he's free to roam the streets, pen catchy-when-you-don't-pay-attention-to-the-lyrics, misogynistic, and sexually-explicit songs, R. Kelly has joined an elite group of super-stars who narrowly avoided lengthy jail terms for major crimes. Yes, as an acquitted celebrity, he'll join an exclusive club of Famous People Who Got Away With It (Whether They Were Guilty Or Not). Check out some of the club members after the jump. At least two of them, like R. Kelly, have been ruled guilty in the court of public opinion, but who cares if what the public thinks if the jury says you're innocent!

ojbook.jpgMemorabilia dealer Mike Gilbert claims in his new tell-all book that O.J. Simpson confessed to killing Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman when the ex-footballer was high on the mary jane, sleeping pills, and booze. Gilbert is also taking credit for suggesting O.J. “bloat his hands” so the leather gloves wouldn’t fit, though it’s unclear whether he also intends to take credit from Johnny Cochrane for “If the gloves don’t fit, you must acquit.”

The book, How I Helped O.J. Get Away With Murder: The Shocking Inside Story of Violence, Loyalty, Regret and Remorse, whose claims Simpson’s camp is refuting, is supposed to hit bookstores today.

Now About Those Pregnant Women...

all+whitejury

The desiccated Supreme Court today overturned the death sentence of Allen Snyder, a black Louisiana man convicted of murdering his wife's lover in 1996.

In a 7-2 decision penned by poncey Justice Samuel Alito, the court ruled that the state trial judge erred when he allowed prosecutors to strike a specific black juror, a man who they said was being dismissed because he was a college student worried about missing class, not because he was black. The Supreme Court reacted with skepticism to that claim, and rightfully so: All five black jurors in Snyder's jury pool were dismissed, leaving an all-white group of 12. Then, throughout the court proceedings, which took place only months after the racially charged OJ Simpson trial, the lead prosecutor reminded the jury often of the "similarities" between the Simpson case and Snyder's case.

gilbert.jpgMike Gilbert, who, by virtue of being O.J. Simpson's sports agent for 18 years, was probably already a scumbag, is proving it with a new book called How I Helped O. J. Get Away With Murder.

"…the book will "detail O.J.'s late-night confession" and offer new evidence showing that Simpson did kill his ex-wife Nicole Brown and her boyfriend Ron Goldman. The book also promises "information on Gilbert's crucial role in obtaining the not guilty verdict and why he stayed silent for so long.""

Oh, but he's not that much of a asshole. A percentage (maybe .00000001%?) of the proceeds will go to the Make-A-Wish foundation. If only two young kids in the mid-90s had made a wish that their dad wouldn't allegedly murder their mom and her friend, then allegedly get away with it, then years later write a book about how all of it came to pass, then allegedly steal some sports memorabilia at gunpoint, Mike Gilbert wouldn't have a book to write to begin with. [NYO]

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the answer is "both."
