Do some news anchors "slip" and mix up Obama and Osama on purpose? Yes. Do many of them work at Fox News? Yes. Do others accidentally mix up the two names because they actually do sound similar? Yes. Matt Lauer, who referred to America's most hated terrorist as Obama bin Laden this morning, likely belongs in the latter group. It happens. CONTINUED »
Hillary Clinton has threatened to boycott MSNBC after Chris Matthews made a series of inappropriate comments and another reporter said that her daughter was being "pimped out" for votes. But Barack Obama became the target of the news network's latest gaffe, when someone flashed a photo of Osama Bin Laden during a story about Obama. Haven't news directors been over the Obama/Osama issue with their employees by now?
Without naming names, NBC News announced Tuesday that it has reprimanded the employee responsible for the mixup, which took place as Matthews was previewing a story on the controversy over Obama's use of another politician's words. A picture of bin Laden briefly flashed on the screen with the headline "Words About Words."
"This mistake was inexcusable," MSNBC spokesman Jeremy Gaines said.
Barack Obama's camp said the apology was "noted" but had no other comment. [EUR]
When you're trapped in a room for 24 hours with nothing but a camera and a dry British man who may or may not be gay and may or may not be making a pass at you, and you may or may not be under the influence of illegal drugs, you have a lot of time to talk and reflect. That's just what Bobby Brown did on 24 Hours With…, a new British series we told you about a few weeks ago. His episode aired last night, and he admitted that he still fears for his life after it was rumored last year that Osama Bin Laden wanted him dead. Apparently, the mass murderer is a huge Whitney Houston fan. (Pre- or post-crack, Osama? Inquiring minds want to know).
Does anyone really think that this guy's life or death is important to Osama Bin Laden, who prefers homicide on a grander, more devastating scale? Still it's funny that Brown is still dwelling on it. With an ego like his, it probably makes him feel special. Let's not burst his bubble.
If Bobby Brown's house gets car bombed any time soon, let's forget I ever said anything.
Oops, they did it again! Because it's just so hard to remember the name of a United States Senator and presidential candidate, yet another conservative talk show host has slipped up and called Obama "Osama"– as in Osama Bin Laden. Honest mistake!
Asserting that it "wasn't intentional" and that "[i]t just kind of happens," Newsradio 850 KOA host Mike Rosen again called U.S. Sen. Barack Obama (IL) "Osama" during the May 30 broadcast of his show — echoing other conservative commentators who have used the name of Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden when referring to the Democratic presidential candidate.
From the May 30 broadcast of Newsradio 850 KOA's The Mike Rosen Show:
ROSEN: Let's start with a little Osama — excuse me, that, that wasn't intentional [laughing] — Barack Obama. That'll happen every now and then with a lot of people, with no intention to connect the two nor any desire to be cute. It just kind of happens. That was completely unintentional.
Conservatives couldn't be more transparent if they tried.
