» 'TOWELHEAD' TITLE WILL REMAIN

From Hollywood Reporter: "An Islamic civil rights and advocacy group has asked Warner Bros. to change the title of its upcoming film 'Towelhead,' saying 'the word is commonly used in a derogatory manner against people of the Muslim faith or Arab origin.' The studio said it plans to keep things as it is and stand by the filmmakers, who chose the title to point out racial stereotypes, though it added, 'We apologize for any offense that is caused by the title.' 'Towelhead,' directed by Alan Ball and adapted for the screen by Alicia Erian from her novel of the same name, looks at the life of a 13-year-old Lebanese-American girl in the early '90s."

"Me love you long time" is phrase uttered by Vietnamese prostitute in Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket, but 2 Live Crew made it infamous in the song "Me So Horny." Fergie, Nelly Furtado, and Mariah Carey have all used the line or variations of it in their songs, but do they know that many consider it to be a racial and sexual slur? Probably not. MTV talked to some prominent Asian Americans — some of whom have to regularly deal with yells of "Me so horny; me love you long time" as they walk down the street — about the line and what it means to them when they hear it.

A white male contestant on the questionably uncanceled reality show Big Brother is taking heat across the Internet for referring to one of his housemates as "that colored girl." People are calling it a racial slur. After watching the clip, we're finding it hard to agree with that characterization.

As I've said before, I agree with the Times letter-writer who said "colored" is perhaps the best word to use to describe African Americans. It's certainly more accurate than black. Your thoughts?

» On a Loophole, Redskins Can Keep Derisive Name

"The Washington Redskins have won the latest round in a 16-year court battle against a group of American Indians, prevailing on a technicality that again skirts the issue of whether the team's nickname is racially offensive. In a ruling dated June 25 and first circulated Thursday, U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly ruled that the youngest of the seven Native American plaintiffs waited too long after turning 18 to file the lawsuit that attempts to revoke the Redskins trademarks. The lead plaintiff, Suzan Shown Harjo, said Friday the group will appeal. 'She ruled as we anticipated she would: for the loophole that would allow everyone to avoid the merits of the case,' said Harjo, president of the Washington-based Morning Star Institute that advances Native American causes."

shutuphonkey.jpgMAYBE YOU KNOW BETTER THAN ME Does anyone actually use the word honky anymore? Besides Naomi Campbell, that is. I'm wracking my brain trying to think of a time when someone has used that word in my presence, and all I can think of is The Jeffersons.
