» Saudi Arabia Hearts Oprah Winfrey?
Oprah can't lose, even in the Middle East. Ever since episodes of her talk show began airing in Saudi Arabia in 2004, Oprah has been one of the most famous and admired figures among Saudi women. Her show is the highest rated English-language program among women 25 and under (a third of the population) and the kingdom's foremost women's magazine devotes a page to her every month. Explains Princess Reema bint Bandar al-Saud, "“Oprah dresses conservatively. She struggles with her weight. She overcame depression. She rose from poverty and from abuse. On all these levels she appeals to a Saudi woman. People really idolize her here.” [NYT] |

Something interesting from Saudi Arabia: Though the colors of the citizens here vary as much as they do in most other nations, there's very little racism. Instead, classism is the preferred prejudice. Xenophobia is also a major issue, with Saudis showing caution around foreigners of any type. But, again, if an immigrant has a nose for business, he'll have no problem ingratiating himself into Arab society. Oh, the many wondrous ways we've learned to exclude! |

Hey! It’s me, Cord. Sorry to leave you hanging, but I’ve been quite busy lately. Tax season! or whatever, right? Then I had to go to Trader Joe’s, and everyone in NYC knows the lines there are ridiculous! Oh, and then I had to go to Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to donate a kidney to my ill father. Yes, seriously. |
