Do Stereotypes Get A Bad Rap?
A debate about stereotypes seems to be afoot amongst the bloggers at Psychology Today. One blogger says they're just "empirical generalizations," which all scientists use and that they are mostly true and get a bum rap. Another blogger is like, are you kidding me*? How do you feel about stereotypes? Do you think there are any out there that are less "stereotype" and more "gospel truth?" *My sentiments exactly. |

MODEL MINORITIES Although it seems more desirable for someone to look at your physical characteristics and infer that you are studious, intelligent, and responsible than for someone to look at you and automatically think you are shiftless, uneducated, poor, and criminal-minded, it's never good to be stereotyped. A new study seeks to refute, or at least temper, Asian Americans' "model minority" stereotype, a perception that causes Asian American students who aren't high achieving to slip through the cracks. “The notion of lumping all people into a single category and assuming they have no needs is wrong,” Alma R. Clayton-Pederson, vice president of the Association of American Colleges and Universities, who was a member of the commission the College Board financed to produce the report, told the New York Times. “Our backgrounds are very different,” added Dr. Clayton-Pederson, who is black, “but it’s almost like the reverse of what happened to African-Americans.” |

This is part of an editorial feature on American Apparel in the I-D, a British mag. I'm not sure if this constitutes black face, because that would depend on whether or not this model is actually black (I think she is) and whether or not they darkened her skin (who the hell knows?). But when I look at the multi-hued leggings-turned-headwrap and the huge, exaggerated hot pink lips I don't think, "Hey! Look at that gorgeous color contrast!" I think, whoever styled this shoot was inspired by Sambo and old, racist imperialist images of Africans. I think, this is a caricature of a black woman. And that is not acceptable. To me, anyway. The slogan, "Sweeter than candy. Better than cake," just ties it all together so nicely. But everyone has a different gut reaction. What's yours? |
