At right is Joy Carter, a Nigerian woman who as a child was adopted by white British missionaries. Joy is a person of interest to some formerly silent English citizens who believe the nation's adoption agencies should rethink transracial adoptions. And you might be surprised at who these citizens are. As it stands, there are currently no rules restricting white parents from adopting black, Indian or biracial children, and it's not racists who are out to change this, but, instead, non-white orphans raised in white homes who say they're worse off because of it: |

The Grass Isn't Always Greener
A representative of the British National Party — a whites only, anti-Islam, anti-gay nationalistic political party — has won a seat in the London Assembly after receiving more than 5 percent of the constituency's vote. It's the first London Assembly seat ever won by a BNP representative. Richard Barnbrook, the BNP member elected, immediately set the tone for his time in office in a press conference in which he railed against Muslim immigrants and gays: "You may have your religion behind your closed doors, but you don't bring it onto the streets. … You can be gay behind closed doors … but you don't bring it onto the streets, demanding more rights for it." |

According to a report published by the British government, England's black children are falling behind their white classmates in academic achievement. "Black pupils do worse than white ones even when class is accounted for," notes the study, before saying and "ethnic penalty" might be negatively hampering black students. In the interest of closing the gap, the government recommends that faculties "debate and challenge" institutional racism in their schools, that teachers devote time to personal work with black pupils and that curricula are overhauled to include black culture and history. |

ALL TOO COMMON, IN FACT "The House of Commons, held up as a beacon of democracy, has a 'dirty little secret', according to black MPs - its racism. Dawn Butler, only the third black woman ever to have become an MP, said she faced such frequent racism from politicians of all parties that she had to 'pick her battles' to avoid being constantly in conflict with her colleagues. … 'I thought people in Parliament would be progressive. It is still a shock that they are not,' she said. … In an article written for the Fawcett Society's new collection of essays, Seeing Double: Race and Gender in Ethnic Minority Women's Lives, Butler describes how former Tory minister David Heathcote-Amory confronted her as she went to sit in the members' section on the terrace. 'He actually said to me: 'What are you doing here? This is for members only.'" |

In the UK today, Basil Brush, a children's television program about a fox, was exonerated of charges of racism, reports the BBC. After receiving a phone call from a private citizen who complained of a scene depicting a "Gypsy woman," police investigated the case, concluded it had no merit and made no arrests. In related news, IN ENGLAND YOU CAN CALL THE COPS IF YOU WITNESS RACISM ON TV AND THEY MIGHT GO AND ARREST SOMEONE!!!!!! Why didn't we know about this? If the US shared the UK's zeal for targeting bigots on the small screen, how many shakedowns would BET face per month? MTV? Fox News? |

Rude Boys
At a performance last night in London, England, inky rapper and vocal proponent of cough syrup abuse Lil' Wayne encountered something he seldom does stateside: a chorus of boos. After being hit in the chest with an unidentified object, Young Weezy implored the crowd to beat the person who had launched the projectile; he then said he refused to continue and pronounced the show over. As he stormed off stage, Wayne was showered with bottles. Oh, rap shows, when will you stop being embarrassing for everyone involved? |

Bobby Brown appeared on a new British show called 24 Hours With…, a reality show where the guests spend a day locked in a room with host Jamie Campbell. Things got pretty tense when the conversation veered toward Brown's cell mates in jail. The above clip illustrates what happens when raging homophobia, stupidity, drugs, and an unnatural amount of facial unattractiveness meet with British humor. And it ain't pretty. No pun intended. |
