» Roland Martin Joins Joyner

Radio host, syndicated columnist, and CNN analyst Roland S. Martin will be filling the coveted spot on the Tom Joyner Morning Show left open by Tavis Smiley. Martin, who will act as "senior news analyst" on the show, was named one of Ebony's 150 most influential African Americans. "I am excited to join The Tom Joyner Morning Show, which has been at the forefront of community advocacy in Urban radio," said Martin. "As senior analyst, my goal is to bring clarity and a sense of purpose to the morning show's eight million listeners on the issues surrounding the current presidential election, but also provide a common sense perspective on the many other social and cultural issues of the day through interviews with top newsmakers, and occasionally commentary." So that he can feel the love

joynersmiley.jpgWe all know by now that Tavis Smiley, despite whatever he says, has decided to step down from his post on the Tom Joyner Morning Show due in part to the blacklash* he received from listeners after he had some harsh words for Barack Obama. Joyner, who admits that he wished Smiley would show Obama more love (Joyner's all about the love), wrote an open letter arguing that Tavis Smiley on the radio saying things people don't like is better than no Tavis Smiley at all. In the letter, he called on his fans to show Tavis the "love" he deserves.

"I want you to call him, e-mail him, text him, hug him, kiss him, get him in a corner and wrestle him and tell him how much you love him and appreciate his love for black people. Everyone needs that sometimes. And Tavis needs it right now."

When Smiley's walking down the street today and a group of rabid Tom Joyner fans wrestle him to the ground and shower him with kisses and sweet nothings, he's got Joyner to thank.

*That was a typo, but I decided it worked.

The Essence Festival, which is expected to bring 200,000 visitors and a much-needed $130 million to the city of New Orleans, began yesterday with performances from Ciara and Ludacris, an Obama speech (more on that later), and lots of celeb visitors. Check out the pics after the jump.

Tom Joyner, Angie Martinez, and Wendy Williams are catching Usher's wrath for their harsh treatment of his controversial fiancee, Tameka Foster, and speculating that she had something to do with Usher's mom being fired as his manager. Doesn't Usher know that when you lash out at all-powerful DJs, particularly when they actually had a reason to be talking about you, they will just laugh at you even more?
