My reasons are patriotic, political and personal, and the three are intertwined…
Sometimes it takes a while to recognize that someone has a special ability to get us to believe in ourselves, to tie that belief to our highest ideals and imagine that together we can do great things. In those rare moments, when such a person comes along, we need to put aside our plans and reach for what we know is possible.
We have that kind of opportunity with Senator Obama. It isn’t that the other candidates are not experienced or knowledgeable. But this year, that may not be enough. We need a change in the leadership of this country — just as we did in 1960.
Most of us would prefer to base our voting decision on policy differences. However, the candidates’ goals are similar. They have all laid out detailed plans on everything from strengthening our middle class to investing in early childhood education. So qualities of leadership, character and judgment play a larger role than usual.
What Obama is doing, and will do for young African-Americans, is beyond precedent in the post MLK era.
American needed this, a charismatic Black leader who would be able to straddle the gap between both worlds, and perhaps even narrow it for the future of our children.
I, as a former Clinton-ite am extremely disappointed that Bill wold behave like a typical Southern White person when there is a dispute with a Black person Bill Clinton reverted to race-baiting, I feel betrayed as I thought he was better than that.(to me, race-baiting was only a Republican strategy)
"Out of Many We are One" is an age old philosophy that has grown to become the "One World" movement, America is ready.
P.S. I am not an Obama/Clinton worker, I just have strong humanity opinions.
This is a great endorsement for Obama but the fact that the Dems are so divided will screw their party in the end.
Side note: With the recession, I'm looking more and more at their goals and past performance on that front. This will probably matter more to people in November than it does now. The rebates that both Clinton and Obama will avoid talking about is kinda silly to me. It's basically saying "you might lose your job in the coming months, but here's a check. Go spend it!" Concrete plans need to be discussed more than ever, not just that they'll boost the economy. Of course that's what people want to hear but how?
Endorsements mean nothing to the average voter, and that's as it should be. I also thought Obama was the "candidate of change", yet he seeked out, and is revelling in the endorsement of someone as "establisment" as establishment gets. Funny.
Btw, what exactly has Obama done (or will do) for young african americans? His candidacy is decidedly "race neutral", and the last I checked he barely mentions black people. This man is not GREAT, and I am sooo sick of him being compared to RFK,MLK,JFK,and Ghandi. The man has done nothing of substance beyond giving good speeches laced with rhetoric and pandering.
@Solitaire -
Some of us see only as far as tomorrow, others of us see history.
This is a point in time that will forever live on in the American lexicon.
America has made baby steps towards racial reconciliation, lets nurture this baby.
Long after this election cycle, this truth, of this moment will remain standing.
Solitaire, I hope I answered your question.
TruthTeller, you obviously have far more faith in the American people than I do.
I've said this before and I'll say it again: IF a Dem wins in November, there are a lot of people, white women and black men included, who will just be waiting for them to screw up. EVERY President will screw up several times. That's just the way it is so WHEN this happen, I believe that you'll hear a lot of bashing peppered with one form of hate speech or another and at the end of it, it'll be evidence enough for many to not elect a black person or a woman in the future. I've seen this happen in the business world.
It's of course not reason enough to withhold your vote but it is a reality that I'm sure both know that they'd have to deal with if they get that far. They'll have to work twice as hard for half the kudos. Considering the current state of the union, the next president can only do so much. Americans seem to expect someone who will sprinkle fairy dust on everything bad and though there's no historic basis for this, that is the false perception people have of Kennedy and especially Reagan. And yes, there are lots of Dems who love Reagan. They are melanin challenged.
Done with politics for the day and possibly the week.
You are living in a fairytale world TruthTeller. Come back to reality soon.
I understand how you feel, that's why I don't think Blacks should enter Baseball, I am totally against it because what if Jackie Robinson strikes out, whites won't allow another Black player.
also, we need to wait awhile before entering Golf, if Tiger Woods fail we won't get another chance for a long time.
Ummm??? Honestly, I could care less about Obama being black or about history right now. If my father rose from the grave and wanted to run for president, but I didn't think he was the right candidate - he wouldn't get my vote. The question you have to ask yourself is…if Obama was white and talking the same talk, would you vote for him?
Maybe I grew up in a different world, but race doesn't matter to me. A dem in the white house protecting things that I want protected is what I care about. Pretty much all I care about. All of this "change" crap is just a slogan - one that all of the candidates are using.
Oh..and re the Kennedy's endorsing Obama…I have many politically active friends who can't stand the Kennedy's, but now that they are endorsing their boy, the Kennedy's are wonderful, great people. LOL.
It's really nice that race "doesn't matter" to BMD. From what I've read in these comment pages about her (and it's impossible not to, since she comments so much), she's also married to a white guy.
There's not too many African Americans in this country to whom race is immaterial…
I usually just lurk.
But today, I have to say, Billie, that was uncalled for. You could have made your point without personal attacks.
Billie - I really get you heated, don't I Billie? Hahahaha!
Thanks, queen.
