The money, which often isn't as much as one might think, that recording artists make off of their music these days is enough to make the average person very happy, but not quite enough to fund the crazy, extravagant lifestyles that they like to publicly flaunt. Hence, the ubiquitous clothing lines, colognes, footwear lines, and other branding deals. In recent days there have been a flurry of such deals, from high brow to low brow.
1) Kanye West told Women's Wear Daily that he has a men's show line in the works with his favorite label, Louis Vuitton. He also has a women's clothing line coming out this fall.
2) Nas is partnering with Fila, which will offer "reciprocal financial support" for Nas' print and TV campaign in exchange for Nas wearing the brand an co-creating an 80s inspired apparel line.
3) Look out world! This fall, you can buy your very own bottle of Lil Wayne's champagne, which is called Halo. There will be none of Wayne's signature syrup involved in its production. I don't think…
4) Soulja Boy just signed a multi-year deal to create an apparel and shoe line for Yums Shoes. Also look out for the Soulja Boy cartoon. Whoopee.
5) The always enterprising Master P and Romeo have designed a clothing line that will launch this fall at Walmart. It's their second Walmart deal.
I don't do LV but I'm excited to see what Kanye does. If nothing else, it will stand out.
I too shall pass on "signature syrup"
Kayne West is very fashionable. I have to give it to March Jacobs and the people at LV for giving Kayne and Pharrell a chance because a lot of "us" do spend a lot on LV merchandise.
With the way prices are increasing on high-end merchandise very few of "us" and anyone else will be able to buy it for much longer.
The dollar is dead and some people will spend just to be down or keep up with the Jones.
1) You can't tell Kanye nothing now. But really, I am happy and excited for him. It's like a dream come true…For him that is.
2) Who wears Filas anymore?
3) ?
4) ?
5) I think this is very smart of them. Bridge lines are always profitable because it allows the people who actually support the music to get in on another piece of the pie. So I commend Master P and Romeo for doing this.
@Loudmouth, you right nobody wear fila anymore most of the young kids have probably never even heard of fila. But 80's fashion is back.(why?) Hence Fila wanting to make a comeback on the hills of that trend. Who remembers what they said the letters for Fila stood for back in the day? I dare not say it.
It will be interesting to see what Mr. West comes up with at Louis V.
I look forward to seeing Kanye's vision in Louis Vuitton since that's about all I can afford to do is see it.
this is getting sickening. why does everyone think they can be a fucking clothing designer/product promoter/singer/producer/////? this is becoming less about creativity and more about collecting chips. everyone's so excited about getting pimped for another purse or in many cases, coin purse.
Nice. I'm also looking forward to Kanye's collab with Nike…that's gonna be great!
Fila is still very popular in Europe..and as mentioned the euro is killing the dollar so….. I'd put my money there as well……
@di-my-e-cosign.
Many of these celebrity lines, which are really licensing deals-you can use my name but pay me- are crap. A number of celebrity clothing lines feature cheap tattered looking materials with huge markups
Kayne did a nice job when he was guest editor at Complex magazine. I can't wait to see what he will do at LV.
I really really want to see what Kanye comes up with. I can actually see him doing very well in design, he has a great fashion view
