The Truth Hurts

morphine.jpgBlacks are the least likely minority group to abuse prescription drugs. Perhaps someone should tell ER docs that, because black are also the least likely to receive narcotics for pain during emergency room visits.

In the study, opioid narcotics were prescribed in 31 percent of the pain-related visits involving whites, 28 percent for Asians, 24 percent for Hispanics and 23 percent for blacks.

Minorities were slightly more likely than whites to get aspirin, ibuprofen and similar drugs for pain.

In more than 2,000 visits for kidney stones, whites got narcotics 72 percent of the time, Hispanics 68 percent, Asians 67 percent and blacks 56 percent.

You all have never heard that old adage, "the darker the skin the less pain you feel?" No? How about "the darker the skin, the more likely you're a no-good junkie who's lying about being in pain for a hit of morphine?" No?

All doctors are cracking down on giving out narcotics. I used to be able to get any pill I wanted (I have migraines, bad back and a repaired shoulder from playing softball for years) now I have to go to certain doctors. You should also realize that the State of California documents every dr. and patient who receives a narcotic prescription so doctors are very, very sketchy about it. A doctor can lose their licence. It sucks for people who really need the stuff b/c people who don't…know where to go. :-) Oh well. Are you in pain? Holla! (kidding).

I was talking about this with somebody. I wouldn't really say that blacks receive less narcs becuz of their race. There are other factors that are at play. Like financial background, insurance coverage, patients ability to "tough it out", etc. While healing may be more painful w/o narcs, it's actually better to be without them. Narcotics don't help with healing, they just ease the pain. Avoiding them also means avoiding side effects and addictions.

It's truly a shame that the standard lack of compassion for black people is held by so many black people themselves. Shame shame shame.
