We broached this timely subject in an open thread last Friday: Is it a gift or a curse that tabloids and paparazzi show such little interest in black celebrities? The jury is still out on that one, but this week's coverage of the Jay-Z/Beyonce nuptials proves that, for a variety of reasons, editors just aren't that interested in black celebs.
Jay-Z and Beyonce are huge international stars, yet Us Weekly was the only celebrity mag to make it their main cover story. To be fair, I can point to the extremely private nature of their wedding, that they haven't sold any photos, and that the couple hasn't even admitted they're married as reasons why magazines editors might have shied away from making it a main story. But that's not really the reason. They say so themselves.
A tabloid editor told Ben Widdicombe of the New York Daily News that the story was downplayed this week because "African-Americans don't sell covers." And what if Beyonce had offered pictures? They still wouldn't be that valuable, according to one "top editor," who said: "Eva Longoria can get $1 million for wedding photos, but without the expectation of cover sales, Beyoncé might have gotten as little as $250,000 if she had sold hers." Another source chimes in: "We have a saying, 'Only Oprah.' Oprah is the only black celebrity big enough to put on our cover."
Janice Min, the EIC of US Weekly and the only non-white person running a celebrity magazine, calls bullshit. She said that Us Weekly's two Janet Jackson covers were two of the magazine's all-time bestsellers.
When offered a refreshing change of pace (two megastars get married in the very city where these magazines have their offices after a long courtship) it makes little sense that celebrity weeklies would roll out the same "Britney's crazy" and "Jennifer Aniston goes on a date" stories that have been on rotation for years. Then again, it makes all the sense in the world.
I like Beyonce, but her and Jay are just not compelling or interesting as a couple.
The black couple thing isn't helping them either.
I guess, since Beyonce isn't as popular to gossip about than Paris Hilton /Nicole Richie/ J.Lo, etc. because she doesn't talk much about her personal life , she's not as exciting to read about for certain people. And the fact that African-Americans aren't really stalked by the paparazzi, or wrote about in the tabloids as much as other people. I can't decide if that's something that african-american celebs should be fighting , in order to have equal rights in the gossip magazines, talk shows, etc. or a blessing in disguise?
I wondered the same thing some time ago:

Honestly (in this particular case), what could US Weekly tell the public that they haven't read on a billion blogs already?
Without photos, it's a nothing article and I would not have run it in a prime spot either.
At first I really felt it was because of the lack of confirmed info and pics that stopped the mags. But I go on People's website often and they will rate their top 5 viewed articles of the week. The Beyonce/Jay wedding was the number 1 viewed all week. And this week the story about her having a huge diamond ring even though no ones seen it was the number 2 story. So there is definately public interest from more than the Black community.
Isn't this why black gossip sites started in the first place? There's a warranted expectation that the mainstream celeb press won't cover black entertainers, even if they do something reprehensible. It's actually kind of a good thing. Were those same magazines goading them into a marriage in the first place?
Also, Beyonce and Jay-Z don't do anything gossip-worthy. If she shaves her head, gets out of a limo upskirt with no draws, shows up on the red carpet wearing a SCRAM, or her and Jay-Z are caught on video smoking crack, then maybe?
The big news will be the divorce.
To secretive. To fast. No suspense : Bey-Jay didn't take the proper time to catch people's interest. No pics. No drama (for once). Eva Longoria (for exemple) announce her wedding months before it took place.
Exactly toll of the above.
REMEMBER THIS: Tabloids normally come out on Wednesday, so they have to have their news items in by Tuesday night. They held off on announcing anything, there still is no official confirmation, only that they got a marriage license 2 days before Friday. So they missed the tabloid news cycle.
Beyonce, even if she's dumb as rocks when she talks, leads a very productive and family based type of life. You don't hear rumors of her wigging out (pun intended) in da club, or smoking/sleeping around.
I've seen the tabloids all over stars (black, white and latino) when they mess up or are starting to hook up with somebody new, so not really big news here.
Is it safe to say that black/latino stars are more careful with their image? Jennifer Lopez is still under the tabloid spotlight since she carries so much controversy over from her previous relationships/marriages so the interest is still there.
Halle Berry is another tabloid darling that calmed down after a while, but it's not that these sistas are making news just to be relevant.
I really wish they wouldn't compare Beyonce to Eva Longoria. Eva is an attention-whore. She would sell her vital organs if she thought it would get her some publicity.
Actually, they did not miss the tabloid news cycle. I freelanced at Us Weekly back in the day and the closing night was Monday (we were there until the wee hours of the morning) and the issue was on the stands on Tuesday. People closed on Tuesday night and probably still does.
I remember very well one Monday night at Us Weekly when we thought we would get to go home early BUT - the news came over the wires that Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman had filed for divorce. That meant an automatic all-nighter to shove these kids on the cover by dawn and throwing out the old cover and some stories.
Beyonce and Jay-Z were married on a Friday night and every tabloid in town could have had them on the cover the next week but they chose not to (except Janice). I am not one to say it's race all the time, but in this case I think it is considering the status of both stars and the announcement of Jay-Z's big historic business deal in the same week.
Yep, race.
Black people don't sell covers? How much longer are we gonna believe that? Advertisers are finally (sorta) realizing that white people will buy products advertised by black people, but magazines don't think they can sell something with us on the cover?
Foolishness.
I belive its because not only does no one give a crap, but they seem like the type to sue mags if info isn't correct.
Yes, they are boring, but they should have been given top billing on the covers of those mags. Fishy, indeed.
I'm kind of happy that their wedding hasn't been all over the media, it's refreshing since Bey & Jay are both overexposed in their own respective ways. Anyway, I wish them well, although I can't say how long it's gonna last.
@Mama's Rice & Beans: Since black celebs are in the minority when compared to white celebs, I think the majority do have a better reputation vs. majority of white celebs. This of course excludes the "crazies" like Whitney, Jacko, & the majority of rap/hiphop heads. But that's just me.
Rachel, Eva Longora got on my nerves talking about her marriage to that man. Maybe Beyonce and Jay Z really don't want their marriage and other bussiness out on the streets.
Chynadoll you ain't never lied!
I don't care about this either but then I don't care about Paris and J Lo either. As far as I'm concerned, they haven't even ever admitted to being together let alone married.
They've successfully kept their relationship as private as possible considering their fame. Other than a marriage license, is there even evidence that a wedding toook place?
I bet if Jay and B would confirm their marriage they would be on all the covers.
