The Wonderful World Of Disney, Minus Black Teens

Years from now, if four Florida State football prospects win the Superbowl, they probably won't be saying, "I'm going to Disney World." Why? Because the theme park security banned them for life. The boys, whose fathers include a prominent civil rights attorney and a Disney manager, were banned by Disney under their new "anti-gang, anti-loitering" rules for hanging around Downtown Disney for a prolonged period of time and not leaving when security asked.

Parents of the youths wonder whether there's another reason: They're black.

"I keep thinking to myself, 'This is crazy,' " said Mark Nugent, stepfather of Vincent Williams, football star at Ridge Community High School in Polk County. "Once they realized they weren't gangbangers, why didn't they let them go? They took their pictures. They fingerprinted them. And treated them like common criminals."

Because of concerns about a rise in ganglike activity at Downtown Disney lately, loitering or "any other inappropriate behavior" by groups of youths is not going to be tolerated, spokeswoman Jacquee Polak said Tuesday.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, 45 of the 46 people banned for life from Disney during the past two weekends were black or Hispanic. Because when white kids hang out at a theme park, it's all in good fun, and when black and brown kids do it, it's gang activity.

It's like this…if you're black, you're scary. But if you're big AND black, you're intimidating. And that is something that whites can't have. What ends up happening is that bigger men tend to speak softer around whites to appear non-threatning, but in the end, you're still black. Just can't win out here sometimes.

I agree 100% blkmale, but to the point of the article…let's be honest sometimes "hanging out" turns into acting a fool. I pass kids on the street every day who would swear up and down that they are just hanging out, but they are wilding out, getting loud and embarrassing themselves. I'm black and I don't want to be bothered with them. Now imagine if you've paid money to go to an amusement park and then the same crap is happening? I am biased b/c every day I get on the bus with some feral-ass acting teenagers who really piss me off. Where are the mothers??? I am tired of people feeling like everybody else has to put up with them wanting to bogard the spot while they post up and "hang out." When I am walking down the street, ni**a, move. You do not own this street corner!!!!! F*ck that. Can you tell I'm angry? :-/

I don't agree with the boys in the article having their pics taken and being fingerprinted however.

I agree with both of you. White males do the same thing, especially white males in large groups (sports teams, fraternities). I feel uncomfortable around any large group of rowdy, but even more so around white men because I feel like there is generally a voice of reason with black males. They generally don't go too far if they are otherwise good kids. I've never heard of groups of black boys beating homeless people to death just for fun of it, etc., but there are PLENTY of cases of white boys doing that. Same goes for loitering, rape, murder, etc. If they're black, in school with their lives together, I believe they are less likely to cause trouble than their white counterparts.

Don't call it discrimination. FBI profilers say it too and they are often right.

Serial killer going after random innocent people: generally assumed to be a white male crime
Shooting of a person over crack money: generally assumed to be a black or Hispanic crime

When people make the age old comment that 'what one black person does doesn't define our entire race', I think about stories like this.

To me this is a perfect example. Disney's probably been battling trying to get rid of gangs in their park for a while now. Here you have 4 guys who did nothing wrong, yet they're treated like crap. Those security guards saw black faces (probably flashed back to ignorant fools acting up in the past) and automatically assumed they were bad. I feel sorry for them b/c I'm sure they were confused and angry as to why they were being treated that way.
