Wherein you, the readers, talk amongst yourselves.
So far, on this site and elsewhere, people have a lot more to say about John McCain's VP pick than they do about Barack Obama's historic speech last night. So… point for the Repubs? Was this a brilliant tactical move or is Sarah Palin going to come back to bite John McCain very soon?
Oh, and take a break from stressing about politics for a minute to enjoy the three-day weekend, will you? Happy Labor Day, my dears!
Worst case scenario; 72 year old John McCain is elected President, then (God forbid) dies.
Who would feel comfortable with Palin as President of the country? Not me and I have a feeling a whole lot of people, including Republicans, are going to feel the same way.
So I think adding the former city council member will definitely be problematic for McCain.
And have a safe and fun Labour Day weekend Lauren….:)
it was not a brilliant move. It made him look even more desperate and stupid.
I agree with DFP and Monie.
I have a four day weekend!!!
I agree with Monie. The this-is-who-would-be-running-the-country-if-McCain-dies-in-office thought hit me before Palin was 30 seconds into her comments today. I think McCain may have just lost his last chance to win this election.
It all depends on how the democrats (Biden and Hillary) Spin and attack her
Anyone watch her speech? Ridiculous. Who gives that her husband and her were highschool sweethearts? People get upset about my "Anti-American" sentiments, but this speech is another example of nasty nationalism: she talks about her oldest son having joined the military and then tells us how he's going to Iraq and how she's so proud of the brave men and women blah. The crowd begins chanting "USA, USA, USA!" We shouldn't cheer our military like they're a sports team and we we need to stop taking pride in waging war.
Palin is basically the counterpart to McCAin, in our superficial political theater: young and female. Like Obama's, her looks is that of a (somewhat) new generation that promises progress.
I agree with *M*, it does depend on the the Democrats spin and attack her.
However, there is much to attack. First of all, she has even less experience than Obama and she's younger than he is. That was McCain's main argument against Obama. All people say about her is that she's pro-choice and is a member of the NRA.
Does he really think that Hillary supporters will vote for this woman simply because she is a woman? It's completely insulting to them.
Do I really want a woman whose only experience is being on city council and later mayor of a town with population of 7,000? She's only been in office 20 months and she's involved in an ethic scandal that could result in impeachment? I don't think so.
*spinning and attacking* Can't we have politics that focus on issues, arguments, policies? All the fighting *sigh*
Palin is strongly anti-choice, opposing abortion even in the case of rape or incest.
She supported Pat Buchanan for president in 2000.
She sued the Bush administration for listing polar bears as an endangered species— she was worried it would interfere with more oil drilling in Alaska.
I'm just reading stuff about her and she does seem pretty vicious. Pretty hard line on all the morality/religion stuff. I think it's quite funny that they took an Alaskan…with skeletons in the closet. I'd like to know how her and McCain get along, having only met once before the nomination. I think this is good for Obama.
You have to give McCain credit for his brilliant timing on this. After Obama’s great speech, McCain took all of the spotlight off of Obama and put it back onto his campaign going into the Republican Convention. Had he picked Romney or Pawlenty it would have drawn yawns, but he picked a Tina Fey look a like and it brought a lot of buzz to his campaign. Even we (Obama supporters) are talking about McCain/Palin and not Obama's brilliant speech
Secondly, I read somewhere that the McCain strategy appears to be to play to “us” vs “them”. “US” = married couples with children, workers, home owners. “Them” = kooky leftists, singles, elites, homosexuals, other folks that are NOT us. I tend to agree with that. The problem is that the “us” is becoming a minority.
The Palin choice sends a message that yes there are still (relatively) younger people that believe in having family and we are with you.
My boyfriend said she was hotter than michelle obama.
Arghhhhh!
Girl…
Leave your boyfriend. Now.
She is cute. Crazy but cute!
@ Tariq Everything is and always has been based on "us vs. them." That lies in the nature of a country with a 2-party-system. The fact that the McCain campaign is drawing more attention than Obama's speech is not surprising because we all knew Obama was gonna run for Pres, while McCain's VP pick has remained a mystery. I also don't really understand what there is to say about Obama's speech. The rhetoric is always the same and the content is scarce and revolves around the same things anyway.
First, Palin is NOT cute. She looks like a Stepford wife with bad teased hair extensions–though she doesn't look as alien as Cindy McCain, who always looks a little medicated to me. Next, this chick is pro-life/anti-choice, pro-guns, pro-war (she actually said her son joined the Army for the "right" reasons and will be deployed to Iraq on September 11th-seriously), has an infant (5 mos) with Down's syndrome that she is leaving to embark on this VP journey. If McCain were to get in and die, we'd be stuck with a woman whose selection is an insult to feminists everywhere. I'd be looking to leave the US pronto for a country where the leader isn't a complete and total moron. I can't imagine 4 more years of the foolishness we've endured thus far.
I meant "badly" teased.
She's cute? She's cute but Michelle Obama's attractiveness is questionable.
Pretty is as pretty does.
And….(drum roll)…..Palin's 17 year old daughter is KNOCKED-UP!! The fun starts now….lol
God, I wish I could've written a better story about this presidential race.
Even Hollywood couldn't make this up. I mean really, Palin's story rivals the Spears in trashiness (Britney n' dem).
Palin's youngest child and grandchild will be less than 9 months apart in age. Palin' can't effectively execute an abstinence policy in her own house; how the hell does she want my trust that she can execute any other policy in the USA?
…hilarious! Palin herself is in some Pro-Life/Pro-Contraception group, but failed to sex ed her own daughter. Religious people… Poor daughter was probably ashamed of buying condoms.
cosign comment#22 Josh.
@ K.I.M. I always tell people truth is stranger/ more interesting tha fiction.
McCain thinks he's slick picking Palin as his VP. The sad papart is that there are a lot of Americans that are stupid enough to fall for this.
PLUS she's claiming that her daughter WILL be mamrrying the baby's father (basically a shot gun wedding, smh).
