Will Rev. Jeremiah Wright's recent speeches prove fatal to Barack Obama's candidacy? Why or why not?

I think not.
I think Wright represents, unfairly, a connection with the older generation of African-American leaders who harbor conspiracy theories and resentment towards whites. I think that's why Wright's comments were blown way out of proportion, while Hagee's were pretty much ignored.
Al Sharpton blasting Obama will only help Obama, too.
Obama making a very clean break with Wright marks a significant change in that perception. I expect Obama's poll ratings to go up.

Nah I think Rev Wright is just a crazy uncle that we all have and its obvious his views differ from Obama's views.

In the Dem primary, no, it will not be the end. However if he gets the nomination…this will be where his eventual demise will have started.

My coworker (older white male around 60 from Pennsylvania) predicts that BO will get the Dem nomination but will not win the general election…Lets just hope he is just talking nonsense as he usually does :-)

It proves fatal in that the majority of voters in this country are so narrow-minded & stupid that they'ed scrutinize EVERYTHING an old-school black minister would say, & then apply it to the other black guy who happens to be standing right next to him. The more shit changes, the more it stays the same.

& Really, has Rev. Wright said anything that is NOT true?

Agreed on your first point, FlashingLights. More than any other, this election will prove either my best or worst sentiments about the American people, depending on the outcome. My partner & I are set to leave the country (seriously) if McCain wins.

Regarding your 2nd point, I can't say that the "God damn America" speech was wrong factually, but apparently he's made other speeches saying AIDS was a government experiment to kill off black people, etc. which seems like conspiracy speculation b.s. to me.

I'm so happy Barack separated himself from this nutjob today. Besides peddling his outrageous views, he pretty much called Barack a liar by saying what he was saying because he was a politician. WTF! That's a big deal and a huge form of betrayal. I'm sure the relationship between both of them is ruined for good.

He may get the nomination, but he will lose the general election, and the seeds of his destruction were planted today.

Btw, Barack is a liar/panderer, and i'm so glad Rev Wright exposed his phoniness to the public.

Well, I certainly hope not! I think he should wait until AFTER the election to address this issue - most voters had forgotten about it, but he's thrown himself back into the spotlight. I'm aware that the North Carolina Republicans have used him for their advertisement, but it still wasn't wise for him to generate press on his comments. Now some are going to think the republican ads have substance, even though they do not. Obama is not Wright. Sadly, some people are too silly to realize that.

And what is up with his HIV comments? As someone who works in Biotechnology and has done courses on Virology, I have to say his comments are ridiculous in the extreme - NO ONE has that sort of technology to engineer such a successful virus, not now, and certainly not in the 70's. You'd have to have unparalleled understanding of viral genetics, combined with highly advanced nanotechnology which doesn't exist today, much less 30 odd years ago. Please, Rev. Wright, read about HIV before making his extremely stupid comments.

Looks like McCain and Clinton can take it easy now (actually, McCain has had it easy for some time now). All they've got to do is watch and wait as the media blows this up and does some damage.

DR.Rev Wright is a very smart person and has do massive amounts of research on the subjects in witch he speaks on, but he talks to the wrong crowd of people of his finding.

The government did in-fact inject illnesses in Black people in Alabama in the 60's and didn't tell them what they did just to see the reaction and this is what Dr.Wright was basing his topic on, so read your history people.

DR.Wright was invited to the white house by Hillary Clinton and Bill for prayer in the Monica case….Google it and see, The Clinton's and media dont tell the hold story…

I wonder how much the Clinton campaign paid Wright to speak-up. I wouldn't put it past them.

Are you people watching the news??!!! Rev. Wright was clearly showing off at the Press Corps. I mean, who is this man?? Is this not the person who married Michelle and Barack, baptized his children, was his spiritual adviser!! Now all of a sudden this?? Something is not right. Something is soo off. They are setting Barack Obama up and using this Rev. to do it!! This was all planned. They must be paying him!! They more I think about this, the more I believe it. Here comes this black man wanting to be President. Doing every thing right, I mean everything, they're terrified of him, he's too perfect, so they come up with these bs Rev. Wright tapes an now somehow there're Obamas words!! Please!! AND MIDDLE AMERICA is falling for it hook, line and sinker. This is the most important thing happening in our life time and most blacks are asleep! Wake up!!! Don't give up on him!! He is worth fighting for, I promise you!! Let's take this country back and give it to the people!. You know "We the people…"!! It's sounds like some black supporters are already turning away!! I will stand behind Barack 1,000 percent. He is the real deal. We will not see this again. If AMERICA is saying this black man is not good enough, then what they are really saying is no black man will ever be good enough. ARE WE GOING TO LET THEM CONTINUE TO SPEAK FOR US?? TO KILL OUR ONE CHANCE OF WITNESSING SOMETHING SO GRAND!! I want to see it. I want my kids to see it. I want all our kids to see it. Please Lord.

I'm all for free speech, but I wish someone would just shut him (Wright) away in a closet until the election is over. Even though Obama will attempt to "remove" himself from Wright, the media twist and turn this around into something vile.

Rev. Wright is not crazy. As Jay Smooth said about Alicia Keys, he's just "extra suspicious." And if you know anything about what the government has done to black people then you might think some things are far fetched, but hardly impossible.

Rev. Wright is crazy. My favourite part of the speech was when he was asked about his tolerance of other faiths. He responded with a quote from John 10:16 - "I have other sheep, which are not of this fold" - as if to imply that he, like Jesus was accepting of all peoples. He forgot the rest of the quote - "I must bring them also, and they will hear My voice; and they will become one flock with one shepherd". The quote isn't about acceptance at all. He's no different than the millions of other hustler preachers twisting the Bible to fit his needs. And he just cost Barrack the election.

@ solitaire, love ya, but you *know* you'd die if we Obama supporters started calling you a "Hilla-fool." Be cool, friend, be cool.:-D

@industryfinest, I feel your anger over the gub'ment injecting syphillis into Black men just to "observe" it spreading within Black communities. And the various medical facilities forcing sterilization on Black women under the eugenics guise. (Angela Davis wrote about this in "Women, Race, and Class.") But Korolev is right: scientists were dealing with diseases and body parts that already existed, not cooked up in lab. That's why Reverend Wright's comments about HIV come off as bad science at best and wack at worst. It comes off doubly odd that an otherwise well-read man who has a AIDS ministry–where people are depending on credible information to guide them through a terminal illness–to say something like that.

I also understand why Rev. Wright would want to clear his name about what the media has been saying about him. Honestly, I think I would have waited until the fervor died a little more than score a book deal with the same publisher as Sen. Obama. The "press tour" is too momentary, too quick to be forgotten, in the heat of this campaign.

AIDS was not created to kill black ppl. If you want to believe consipiracy theories, the one that makes the most sense is that it was a biological warfare tool that got out of hand while it was being created. They created it, but it got loose or mutated before a cure could be found.

They say it came from Africa b/c it did. Where else can you do something like create a virus like that w/no one looking or caring?

So, industry, why don't YOU study up on something.

If Obama doesn't get the nod will it be that difficult to believe it was b/c people just don't like him as a candidate? It's so easy to use the racism crutch even when there's no evidence of it, huh? We've had two dems get killed in elections - was it b/c they were white? No. Even faced with war and Chimp Boy (Bush) dems still lost. Let's take a breath everyone, ok?

I know y'all don't like what I just said, but that's my thought on it.

After reading my post….maybe I am giving Americans too much credit, but I really do believe that if/when he goes down it won't be b/c of race. That may play a role (like I said earlier in this thread), but that's only going to be a small part of it.
