Wherein you, the readers, talk amongst yourselves.
There's been quite a bit of hubbub surrounding Mike Myers' portrayal of a guru in the new movie, Love Guru. Shocker: some Hindus have found it less riotously funny and more terribly offensive. EW.com counted down some of the more offensive comedic or stereotypical portrayals in movie history, including Gone With The Wind's Mammy and Eddie Murphy's Mr. Wong/Rasputia in Norbit.
What do you think are some of the most offensive characters in movies or television?
It's a sign of a crappy movie. If you need to rely on bad ethnic jokes, fat suits and dramatized accents, the movie is s–t. Some will see it nonetheless.
I'm with Dave Chapelle on this one: stop putting black men in dresses! But, unlike him, I put the onus on those black men, and not just the studios. So: black men, stop wearing dresses! Unless you're Tyler Perry, in which case it's clear that you're just working through a deep sort of longing.
If you don't like the movie don't watch it. I'm sure the Scottish were just as offended when a canadaien with English descent did his phat bastard impersonation. Also, you can name just as many white actors that have had to wear a dress, so its not just exclusive to us. I can name Stallone, Russell, R Williams, Hoffman, Swayze, and just about any comic from saturday night live.
I never like the 'black friend' that main (white) characters always have. The "friend" is always a stereotype of some sort.
Jar Jar Binks. I didn't think the whole alleged racial angle was the main crime committed by the Star Wars creators, but they really should have known better as they were making up a character that was the single most irritating thing I've seen on screen. Every time he appeared, I wanted someone else to grab a light saber and chop him into little tiny pieces.
-Every single black character on Weeds. The character of Heylia is just a walking stereotype of the "sassy older black woman" who is actually just loud, annoying and incredibly abusive. I'm actually shocked that black folks are not incredibly offended at her character. Conrad is every stereotype of the horny, not-too-bright black guy lusting after white women.
-Madonna's husband Guy Ritchie always features black characters in his movies as being stupid, slow and error-prone. Watch 'Snatch'
I love Jar Jar Binks!! He really grew in the series, by the end he was a senator
I thought the voting on the Entertainment Weekly website was interesting. Really, no one finds Mammy offensive? Or Long Duck Dong? Seems like the voters couldn't bear to criticize their dear "classic" movies…
Flavor Flav. Oh wait, he's for real.
Larry-
I think that's a silly excuse. Just don't watch it? That's like saying, "if you don't like racism in America, then go live somewhere else!"
In regards to the question posted? Every mammy character on televsion, movies, etc. I'm glad they mentioned the movie Norbit.. I was so upset after watching that movie, after about five minutes into the movie I took out my laptop and took notes so that I could write a ranting review later. Ha, nerdy, I know.
@Cass: exactly
Stokes, additionally the same mofos that say "if you don't like it, don't watch it" will turn right around and say "how do you know it's offensive if you didn't see it?" *eyeroll*
I still think the PJs takes the cake for ridiculousness in television…and it came from the mind of Eddie Murphy. Shocker.
