Wherein you, the readers, talk amongst yourselves
Tonight, on the 45th anniversary of the March on Washington and Martin Luther King, Jr.'s, "I Have A Dream" speech, the first black man to ever receive a major party nomination will deliver his acceptance speech. While no one disagrees with this evening's historic importance, a lot of people disagree with the way Obama plans to deliver the speech — on an elaborate stage at Denver's football stadium in front of nearly 80,000 people. Do you think this is a mistake or a brilliant decision on the part of his campaign? Feel free to weigh in after the speech with your thoughts, as well.
What time is it? I'm going boxing in 45 minutes. Hope I don't miss it. If not, I'll see it on YouTube shortly after.
Let me see…. Barack in front of 75,000 people in an arena (which by the way, is completely sold out)or McCain in front of 10,000 people in a hall that they're still trying to fill? (There are still lots of tickets left. See DailyKos.com) What makes me beieve in the candidate more? I'll go with the arena.
I think the anniversary of the MLK speech and Obama's speech is just a coincidence (which is badass if that's how the dates fell).
They set the date for the conventions early in the year and everyone KNEW Hillary was the Democratic nominee.
well…considering that MLK spoke to HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of people 45yrs ago, I think Obama is just being modest by doing it at a football stadium holding 80K. We all know the brother could have filled up 3 stadiums worth of people who would travel to see him.
I have no problem with it being held in a football stadium. I think that it is a great location because more people will be able to go out and hear Obama's message!
Michelle, you're right. It was totally a coincidence that today is the anniversary of the Dream speech but I believe there are no coincidences in this life. This is all in divine order. Barack Obama was born and raised up for such a time as this. Everything has been synchronized down to the day in a beautiful way. Who would have thought this man could come out of nowhere and knock Hillary off her perch? Hillary all but had the presidency sewn up. And today is the anniversary of MLK's speech, too? A fulfillment of the dream? Speak on, brother. Speak to 80,000, 90,000, 100,000 people. This is your time. This is our time.
There is no problem with Obama doing this, and it should be a great spectacle with a great speech by an electrifying candidate…the trouble is the way it will be framed by Faux News and the Republicans. You'll be sure we'll be hearing more about Obama as an empty suit, a celebrity, and they'll then jump right in on the supposed "triumphalist" attitude that this kind of spectacle "embodies".
Euughh….just thinking of the inevitable response from those idiots at Fox gets me very angry.
I think it was purposefully scheduled that he spoke today on the anniversary of MLK's speech. I thought Hilary Clinton's speech was as well, actually. Her speech was given on the 88th anniversary of the 19th amendment (giving women the right to vote). At any rate, I think they were both strategically placed on these days, or it was just a REALLY GOOD coincidence.
I was MOVED. I didn't have any strong thoughts either way of it being held in a football stadium. Clearly a LOT of people wanted to hear what he had to say.
OBAMA/BIDEN 2008!
Signed,
An 'Obamanut'
i'm glad obama has no problem with holding these huge gatherings. last night was historical and allowed many of his supporters to be part of history. of course the right will hate on him no matter what he does. he has shown how to run a very creative and brilliant campaign that is different than politics as usual. and he has not done it through the expected channels.
Unless I missed it, he didn't mention MLK by name. He called him "a preacher." That DNC crowd was rarin to go when he finnnnnnnnnally got to the Dream speech but he didn't go there. That could have been half his message in some form or another but he didn't go there.
And he didn't mention the Scripture passage. I was struck by that.
And Barack, we ain't got a TENTH of the money to do all those things you talked about, but OK.
But I enjoyed the moment.
I think it was a great idea to have it a the stadium. He was giving people to be apart of history. I saw on the news where people were saying they were presnt for MLK speech and had to be present for Obama's speech. To be there at MLK speech where his dream was to have equal opporotunity for all men and now witness a black man speak on the same day delivering his acceptance speech for presidency had to be a great experience. OBAMA 08!!!!!!!!!!!
As I was watching, it occurred to me that the stadium and the music and the fireworks were not creating the spectacle, but simply rose to the scale of the event. Obama knew he'd have more than enough people to fill a stadium, and enough money to rent one, so why not? If you know for sure in advance that you can sell out 80,000 seats, why not pick a venue that lets you do that? The fact that he could and did was amazing in and of itself- all the other bells and whistles just seemed like a part of the generally celebratory atmosphere at Invesco Field last night.
