What If It Were Them?

Wherein you, the readers, talk amongst yourselves.

The Republicans and some Democrats are calling foul on the media's obsession with the out-of-wedlock pregnancy of Bristol Palin, the 17-year-old daughter of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. They say that we should leave poor Bristol out of the discussion — she's not running for VP, her mom is. And instead of judging either Palin or her daughter, many are applauding them for the way they've handled an unexpected situation. It's a problem that many Americans face, they say. But this question has been raised in Stereohyped's comments and elsewhere: What if this was one of Barack Obama's daughters (if they were old enough)? How would the media and the GOP handle it?

Lol. The media would have a field day. He'd be ruined. They'd start throwing up all the statistics and studies on how blacks are known for having babies out of wed-lock. They'd also criticize the fact his own mother had him at 18. Not to mention the fact that Obama is the actual presidential nominee, unlike Palin who is just the vice. His shot at the presidency would've been over.

Lauren get out of my head. I was thinking the same thing.

Isn't one of Obama's daughters 11. If so, she is old enough to have a baby. I' ve seen 10 year olds in the family way.

If Obama's daughter was going to have an OWLC, McCain would be calling on the ghost of Ronald Regan and making mention of welfare moms driving Cadillac cars while good hard working Americans struggle to pay their bills and put gas into their American made Fords.

BTW, I think that Palin daughter's pregnancy is 50% her fault. From what I've read so far, she seems to be one of those super strict religious people who is against all forms of abortion regardless of the circumstances. She is also for creationism only ed to be taught in schools. Is it a stretch to say that she is probably closed minded about birth control and teenage sex???

Had she been the type of parent who explained to her daughter that she would prefer if she waits until she is married or an adult to have sex but is she decides to engage now, she should come to her for birthcontrol. Palin and family are bringing back the shot gun marriage. She should talk to Solonge and Britney’s little sister for more info on how successful shotgun marriages are. I am sure that shotgun marriages in which the groom only recently stopped drinking simlac, and discontinued wearing huggies pullups are more likely to fail

The most chilling thing to me is sex is KILLING these people this year. John Edwards, the Palins… If you would have told most Americans a few years back that there would be a Black man running for president and there would be sex scandals, no way with the hypersexualized image of Black men would they have thought sex would be knocking the *white* people out the park. Amazing. And yes, I agree if it was one of the Obamas, there would be MUCHHHH to say about it since Black sexuality is a very hot topic and there is a huge double standard about privacy anyway… as in we don't get it. Only white people are afforded "privacy" and they get to determine what is "private."

Chic Noir: not that it is advocated by me in any means, but some shotgun marriages actually DO work. we can't make an assumption that Brillo Palin's won't.

i agree with Obama that family should be kept out of political arenas, however we all know that it will never happen. i appreciate him taking the high road on this because if he was running a smeary campaign, this type of shit is too good to be true!

of course if the Obama family had this type of *embarrassing personal issue going on, he would be crucified in the media. sorry guys… this just in!!!! a double standard does exist. yes, that's right. it exists. now, what are we all doing to crush said "standard"?

I think either way the media would have a field day. I'm biased but I think the GOPs would use the pregnancy as example of why they need to teach abstinence only programs or whatever. And they would call his parenting into question.

@DI-MY-E- I agree with you. 50 years ago they were fairly common in some parts of this country. I just think that when the husband is a kid himself, the likelihood of such a marriage working is much smaller.
Really, the only think it takes for a marriage to "work" is for the two people to never sign divorce papers. What is marriage happiness???

Di-MY-E,

The divorce rate for marriages with parties under 18 is about 75%. Marriage between these two is not a solution. It's a band-aid on on a hemorrhage.

But the girl aside, it shows that Palin's judgement with regard to her position on abstinence education is suspect.

If this were one of Obama's kids, Hillary would be the nominee right now. no black man who couldn't handle his "ho-ish" daughter could remain as the candidate. And you know they'd be all but be calling her that.

What Khia said. It's not even just a black man. The GOP felt it was appropriate to talk trash about Chelsea Clinton because she was awkward looking like most kids mid-puberty. What the hell makes you think they wouldn't do far worse if she was actually knocked up? If Bush's girl, the one that looks like her daddy, not the Yalie, got pregnant, it'd be the same sh-t. Sorry, Americans don't want to have unwed teenage mothers in the white house or near it (McCain is in his 70s, so her chances of actually becoming president with him are significantly higher than that of most others). Americans like the families in the white house to be very 1950s.

In politics, you have to expect anything. Black, white, gay, female, whatever, if you know you have baggage, stay out of public life if you don't wish to be embarrassed. Your whole past will be dug up and exposed.
Palin should be applauded for her courage, if not for anything else.

" Palin should be applauded for her courage" Courage? What courage? She made her vulnerable teenage daughter a political issue by dragging her out of her igloo (Are there igloos in Alaska?) and in to the public eye. The girl was better of out of school with 'mono'. No one cared when she was just governor Palin and she knew people would find out.

"Palin should be applauded for her courage, if not for anything else"

Seriously? She only brought up her daughter's pregnancy to deflect rumors that her fifth child was actually her first grandchild. And when they introduced Palin, the daughter's belly was covered up with a sheet. And they pulled her out of school when she started to show. She went public because it was about to be leaked-that isn't courage, that's political expediency at the expense of her own child and shameful behavior on Sarah Palin's part.

And I won't give her any points given that she advocates abstinence only training in the schools and reportedly slashed funds to help teenage moms in her state. She's a typical right wing hypocrite-what's good for her family isn't good for anyone else's.

I just love the way the GOP is trying to spin the pregnancy. Saying that it makes Palin a "real" person, that it shows she is "just like us"! Sherry Shepard said the dumbest thing ever on The View today when she said this made Sarah Palin a woman every other woman can relate to from the upper crust to "Lakeisha" in the ghetto(My mouth is still open on the stupidity of that statement).

What is all this talk about her now being "real"? Remember this was the same crap they spit about George Bush, that he was someone "you could have a beer with" or was "someone you could invite to a barbecue". I don't think a President or VP should be an everyday Joe I think they should be extraordinary! I mean we are talking about someone who will be responsible for the lives of billions of people around the world. Should this responsibility really be left to an average Joe..or Jane?!

Ok, so the child is pregnant(?)

Maybe I am cynical because of the previous(now defunct?) rumor of the 4 month old…or, maybe because I don't trust the integrity of the GOP…

Don't be stunned when in say the next few months, the kid 'sadly' loses the baby, and the marriage doesn't take place…remember, Nov. is election, and the just have to hold out till then.

Far-fetched? Maybe, but I don't put nothing past the desperation of the GOP. They are scoundrels !

I beleive God has his hands ALL OVER this election, and there will be more scandals to be revealed before it's all said and done.

One thing is certain, if Obama had ANYthing adverse in his past, they would've uncovered it by now.

I agree, BUT this is Palin's present, not her past. You definitely don't jump into this position and drag your kid and her deliciously trailer trash boo into the national spotlight. You should also ensure that your 17 year old kid who has "mono" isn't posing with liquor repeatedly and that her baby daddy sets his MySpace page to private so we don't all know their business.

Palin should be applauded for her courage, if not for anything else.
I'm sure it takes a lot of courage to sell out your 17 year old pregnant daughter and leap into this huge campaign when your 4 month old kid has Down Syndrome which generally involves some medical problems.
It's also courageous that she can sleep well at night (she sure looks refreshed!) knowing that her negligent abstinence only programs put lots of teens open to unwanted pregnancies and STIs.

Obama would be OVER if one of his daughters became pregnant. Period.

As for the rest…

Shotgun marriages NEVER work. Just because something lasts a long times, doesn't mean it was happy or even content. I wouldn't say Sarah Palin sold her daughter out, which is ridiculous. Should she have waited until the girl was visibly showing? That kind of stupidity is usually reserved for a democrat. She was smart, and got behind the story fast enough to control it. It's brilliant actually.

I just had a light bulb moment!

Curious how the focus is now on Palin, and not on McCain?

Somethings up! Is this strategy to forget about McCain and his lack of vision for our nation so close to election, and scramble over if this VP pick?

Come on people, wake up! Keep the focus on this feeble old man, and how he is not fit for the presidency!

His 'eenie, meenie, minee, moe' pick for a VP proves it!

So she can cut funds for unwed teenage moms because she has the money to take care of her grandchild/children. As always, the poor suffers. Quite the hypocrite! It's always OK to make a mistake when your rich????

I would agree that Palin sold her daughter out. If her daughter was unaware of the scrutiny and fallout that come with being a political family — and it appears she was — Palin herself should have known the international explosion a pregnant daughter makes. It's one thing for Bristol to be the pregnant daughter of the governor of Alaska. It's quite another to be the pregnant daughter of the potential next Vice President of the United States. Palin wasn't even the vp pick yet. She had a choice to make. Should she further expose her family to wagging tongues and talking heads' pointed fingers or should she handle a family crisis within her state. It was her job as a mother to protect her children, not to expose them. Palin acted in her own best interest… in her own ambition at the expense of her daughter. Very poor judgment. Horrible crisis management. This tells me alot about how she handles crises. I learned all I needed to know through this.

Get out of my head! That is the same thing I was thinking. God forbid if the child is really pregnant, but if she has a miscarriage…this whole thing was a ruse…

It's just too convenient that the baby is 4 months and she's "5 months" along…so there's supposedly no chance that the new baby could be hers…lol this whole thing is a trip!

Totally agree. Off topic but I have said the same thing for years about Oprah. You can be s-u-r-e the IRS has its own little special wing devoted only to Oprah Winfrey. The elevator in the IRS building says "Going up. Twelfth Floor"…. doors close… "Going up. Thirteenth Floor…" doors close… "Going Up. Oprah's Floor"….

And after Martha Stewart went to JAIL on insider trading? Ohnononononono *Surely* we get get you on SOMEthing Miss Billionaire O.

knew all I needed to know when that idiot went back to work 3 days after having a baby!

A baby with Down's Syndrome
Who was born a month early
And instead of having it in the South where she went into labor, a month prematurely, she finished her speech, hopped on a jet and bounced back to Alaska
And was back in those size 6s a few days later
Which wouldn't be suspect since she didn't look pregnant when she was allegedly 7 months pregnant and announced it to her staff

It might not be Bristol's baby, but it sure as hell isn't Sarah's

@Daria- Pallin is not the only American woman to do something so courageous. I've read a few items about women who have high ranking jobs, and work up until the moment they give birth. They check of the hospital 20 minutes after they have pushed the baby out to get back to work. The media seems to portray these types of women as brave, dedicated and hard working

What she did is not courageous-it's reckless and dangerous to her and the baby. And no one should be so tied to their job that they are willing to risk their lives and the lives of their loved ones. That's insane.

I think if Sarah Palin (and her fundamentalist cohorts) is pro-abstinence, then she should've had her daughter's pussy sewn shut until she was married. Well, her vagina, anyway. (There are places in the world where it is done, you know?)
