The National Black Republican Association will have a field day with this one. TV One, that cable channel that focuses on black entertainment, has rolled out a plan to extensively cover Barack Obama's candidacy and the Democratic National Convention in Denver next month. Along with BET, TV One isn't concerning itself with the Republican National Convention.
Johnathan Rodgers, TV One's CEO, said:
"While viewers can get coverage of the convention from any number of networks, we plan to cover the convention from a uniquely African American perspective… We are not a news organization. We are a television network that is designed to celebrate African-American achievement. That is why we are covering this convention. If Hillary (Clinton) was the nominee, we would not be covering this year's Democratic convention."
Being the editor of a blog that goes a lot heavier on the Obama than the McCain, it could be seen as a stretch for me to criticize TV One for its myopic political coverage. Although this might be a missed opportunity for TV One to branch out into other political arenas, instead of just following Obama, and only Obama, around with its cameras, television is at its core a money-making business, and it's doubtful any of TV One's viewers would really be checking for John McCain's acceptance speech on the same channel on which they get their daily Amen fix. And if you take away the politics — which is actually sort of difficult to do — the first African American major party candidate is definitely someone that should receive special attention on TV One and BET. John McCain? Not so much.
Unlike Faux News, I will attempt to keep race out of this; having said that, here I go.
I am sure the GOP (grand oil party) will be on this story like w#!t@ on rice. Of course this is the same party that supported Jesse Helms and Strom Thurmond for countless years. So when they speak on "color" issues most people take it with a grain of s@!t.
But wait and see how Faux Noise will react to this. I can see Hannity and Bill O' picking their (sheets) up from the cleaners right now. Rush is probably working himself into a sweat as we speak. To me it is all a case of "the pot calling the kettle b!@ck."
republiKKKans really really need to STFU and move the f–k out of the USA. If they hate Blacks, gays, immigrants, and Muslims so much, then they don't deserve to be in the USA, a nation of diversity.
They should move to Russia, where they can join other assholes in attacking little Jewish girls and throwing rocks at black folks.
The hatemongers of the Republican party make me sick. Having grown up in Berlin, I'm practically allergic to right-wing sentiment, as I've seen what it did to Germany 70 years ago. That alone should have erraticated conservative thinking, but here we are again, gobbling up propoganda like so many ignorant sheep.
I pray that we keep McCain and his backward, outmoded ways out of the White House.
I don't like this idea. They should cover both conventions and cover what the republicans are saying about our issues as well. I would like to see an African American prespective on the Republican convention. This will give some white station a reason to not cover the Democratic convention. They can just say that you can get the coverage on tv one.
Jake - agreed.
Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but they are covering Obama and the Democratic Convention because Obama is Black. If Hillary or John Edwards or any other non-black candidate had gotten the nomination, would they be exclusively following that candidate?
I don't agree with McCain's/Republican politics, but I still would like TVOne to give their viewers a fair chance to choose their next president, unlike Faux News is doing…
Hey Tayo, Fox News is covering BOTH conventions.
Harley, with all due respect, I personally beleive that Fox News does not hold up to their "fair and balanced" promise.
Furthermore, the key phrase from my post was "fair chance".
Even if TVOne covered both conventions, they could negatively spin some of the (good or bad) things that McCain does/says, etc. And I would not condone that either.
Oops *believe
So they just remembered that there's a Black dude running for POTUS?
Having never before heard of TVOne, I can't speak to their mission statement/objectives. If the mission is to merely follow the cult of personality then it has succeeded. If, on the other hand, TVOne endeavors to bring its viewers the major news of the day (impossible though this might be), it has failed. Moreover, Obama is a bi-racial individual of bi-racial parents.
