Does John Wiley Price work at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis?
A white janitor and part-time student at the school was reading Notre Dame vs. the Klan: How the Fighting Irish Defeated the Ku Klux Klan, a historical non-fiction book about a riot between Notre Dame students and the KKK in the 1920s, during his lunch break when a black co-worker decided that the cover of the book, its title, and the mere fact that it was being read in his presence constituted racial harassment. Despite his explanation of the book, the situation escalated, and he was sent a letter by the school's affirmative action officer that said, "You used extremely poor judgment by insisting on openly reading the book related to a historically and racially abhorrent subject in the presence of your black co-workers." Seriously! A whole year later, IUPUI is finally apologizing to the history buff and copping to their mistake. What do you make of the influx of accusations such as these? Is it because we're so desensitized to the actual racial discrimination that goes on in this country? [MSNBC]
that's really silly.
People should be free to read whatever they want. Although to be honest I'd shoot dirty glares at people if I saw them reading racist propaganda books written by David Duke or Daniel Pipes (both racist white douche-bags)
usually I'd peek glances at the cover, title and author's name. if it's something nice, I let out a sigh of relief.
yeah i'm a loser, but so what.
This is the type of PC bullshit that make me cringe.
Now that's just stupid. People have lost all sense of what really is racist.
Am I the only one who wants to read that book now? It looks pretty interesting.
Just for the record IUPUI, is not the same as Purdue University, I do not want my Alma Marta to be associated with the complete foolishness
I cant wrap my mind around what offended the coworker; I wish he had been interviewed to explain himself. The only thing I can come up with is that Indiana has a reputation for being the Klan capital of the US…so he freaked ou?
The accuser needs to open his/her eyes and choose their battles more wisely because, to me, this is a slap-in-the-face to people who have experience REAL, BLATANT, racism. Just my two cents.
What if they were reading Mein Kampf? Or The Leopard's Spots? I have read both books as a black woman and it's needed. You shouldn't feign ignorance because something seems/is offensive. That is so stupid to be offended by what they obviously didn't understand.
::SMACK::
That is all.
This has really gone too far. I agree with khia213. We've lost sight of what is really racist. It was a book! This is ridiculous!
Some people are too sensitive. Before you jump to call someone racist, I would advise that you take a moment to replay the incident through your head. Then act.
and what Nicole said.
Wonder if the person who felt offended has ever read The Boy Who Cried Wolf?
