Wear A Hijab And You're Out Of A Job

Two Muslim women in Dearborn, a Michigan city with a huge Muslim population, are suing a local McDonalds after they were told that they could only work there if they removed their hijabs. This particular McDonalds is so aware of its predominately-Muslim clientele that it serves halal Chicken McNuggets (there are only 2 McDonalds in the country that do this), which makes it even more surprising that the management would not allow the two women to wear their hijabs at work.

Dawud Walid, head of the Michigan branch of the Council on American Islamic Relations, said it's upsetting that a restaurant with such a large Muslim community around it would discriminate against Muslim women seeking jobs.

"They'll take Muslim dollars, but won't hire Muslim female employees," Walid said.

Seems to me that McDs is perfectly within their rights. There was a dress code at every job I've had. One that I coudln't arbitrarily decide didn't apply to me.

I'm quite sure the individual franchiser made that decision because there is no way HQ would do something so stupid.

If you want to live in American Society - you can't come into an American Franchise and demand Religious rights - which is why religion and politics is not in schools and the workplace. I have never seen a Muslim in Corporate America that was allowed to wear anything but the dress code and their is a dress code for the office.

…and why are these Muslim Women trying to work for "The Man". When I was trying to join the Mosque in Harlem, they were against the White Devil.

HA! Dearborn is predominately Muslim and Chaldean, however the community tends to accept those of Middle Eastern descent. These women are Black Muslims, that is probably the real issue.

"American" doesn't mean white, Christian and whatever else is "normal"

America is meant to be a country of religious diversity

I just assumed it wasn't a question of religion but a question of health, food handling, public safety, employee safety…etc, etc, etc, ad infinitum in America with all its laws… because I just thought McDonald's was trying to adhere to some strict health code, which I would assume says you can't have things wrapped tightly on your head/all around your neck/on your face because we need to be able to see what's going on in there.

Let's see if they can join the Military and think that they are not going to have to dress like everyone else.

America is a melting pot and everything is not black and white. Being American does not mean being white. Being American is being free, free to do what the heck you want in your own backyard.

Woman who wear Hijab = modern day slaves.

Kilo: try to stop viewing everything through a Western/White/Christian lens. One can just as easily say all the little girls who dress like sluts are modern day slaves.

Are you trying to say that most of these girls wear the hijab by "choise". I personally think that MOST of them wear it because daddy said so!

I may be wrong but i don't think so!

Only my opignon.

Most girls do ANYTHING their parents say, so I don't see how wearing Hijab is any different. Every parent forces their children to follow their religion, so really most people are "slaves" because they are following the religion of their parents and have been since birth.

Of course, if you ask me, any religious person is a slave.

I know women who CHOOSE to wear hijabs. Yes, I suppose someone can be a slave in the mind if they do or conform to traditions without truly understanding the meaning or desiring to understand the meaning of them. But the fact that THESE women are protesting the religious prejudice of this particular McDonalds, shows to me that they very well CHOOSE to wear the hijab and it has significant meaning to them.

And just because you're not religious or spiritual doesn't give you the right to condescend other people's view and spew out ignorance.

First excuse my spelling, i'm french Canadian. I cannot express myself the way i REALY want to in english.

@ that chick.

This is ONLY my PERSONAL opignon.I never disrespected these girls with my comments or if i did, it was not my intention. I PERSONALY know muslim girls who would like to stop weraring the hidjab and still be true to there religion (yes it's possible) but they are so scared of theire family that they don't do it. And this is suppose to be tha land of the free (USA or CANADA it's pretty much the same). But anyway, even if i'm the WHITE DEVIL i treat everybody the same and this is why i PERSONALY think that every person, no matter the colour or the religion should be able to do/be what ever he/*she want to do/be. No matter the peer preshure.

Sorry again for the typo's, i tryed my best!

@ Michelle

Then don't even bother respond to me stupid!!!!

Once again a conflict of freedom of religion.

Some corporations are getting hip to the increase of Muslims in the professional arena. Such as some airlines incorporating Hijab into their uniform (of course it will be matching the rest of the uniform in color/fabric/etc), but nonetheless it is a step in the right direction of justice.

In my opinion it is not correct to fire someone based upon wearing a headscarf which is required by one's religion because that has nothing to do with flipping patties. It's pure ignorance.

Like he said
“They’ll take Muslim dollars, but won’t hire Muslim female employees,”

to Kilo:

je suis desole mais je ne suis pas d'accord avec toi, je voudrais bien t'expliquer, mais permets moi de le faire en anglais pour que tous le monde puisse comprendre,

I am muslim , I have been for 26 years not wearing Hijab, then I decided to wear it that was 'cause I know it's right, and even before I always felt guilty to let those stupid men look at me!!
you said that girls with hijab are modern slaves, it is just a point of view but if you think about it deeply, perhaps you will understand. for me "some" girls without hijab are modern **** (you know that bad word about women) and some girls just don't understand what is it really, it is not just a scarf, it is a philosphy, that means I am a soul and brain not just a body to watch!!!
and do not tell me that a girl when she goes out showing herself does not mean to attract boys and to show her body!! so is that fair to be as low valued as a product, who ever likes have a look,
I still have few things to tell you, I wore hijab 'cause I wanted to feel unique and nobody can just have a look at my body!! 'cause it's too valuable to be served for free!!

thank you
