Crystle Stewart, a 26-year-old from Texas, was crowned Miss USA 2008 this weekend. She's the fifth black Miss USA, and obviously pretty, smart, and very happy. She succeeds Miss USA 2007 Rachel Smith, who is also black. No one tripped and fell or said anything egregiously stupid. And I'm guessing this one won't end up in rehab. That's about all I can say about a beauty pageant I neither watched nor care about.
Until Miss Universe…
I'll be real, I watch the pageants! Miss Texas and Miss Oklahoma are really the only ones that can compete in Miss Universe against the Latin American, African & European supermodels they be sending.
What I love about Miss Texas is that she is 26 years old, much older than the generic 18-22 year olds, and she is SMART SMART SMART! Good choice, finally!
didn't know Rachel Smith was black…..
You know what, this is just a foreshadowing of the "browning" of the United States. Just wait until 2020, most of those contestants will be minorities.
The pic tells it all : is it really possible to tell that she's black among all the others ? Apart from her Rihanna-esque features : light skin, long hair and light eyes.
Didn't watch the show, saw a snippet, she is smart no doubt, elegant and very self confident.
She looks like my cousins.
I believe that this is the pagent they gave to us. We win this one a whole lot.
pam, you are crazy!
pamalicious we also won miss universe two years in a row after Donald Trump took over.
You know what? I'm more surprised than a black woman could win Miss Texas. Black women have been winning Miss USA and there's generally one in the top 3, at least when I watched those things in the 90s. I think all but one of the Miss Texas competitors had blond hair and blue eyes. I was shocked when they picked a brunette in like 98 or 99.
Kudos to her.
