Not to be outdone by CNN and its new documentary series about being black in America, MSNBC is airing a documentary Friday called Meeting David Wilson. It’s about a young black man named David Wilson who, in the course of researching his family’s history, finds the descendant of the white family that owned his ancestors. The man’s name is also David Wilson.
The documentary airs Friday at 9pm, and it will be followed by a 90-minute “conversation” about race moderated by Brian Williams.
What is there to say, really? The man had nothing to do with it. He wouldn’t be able to say or do anything to change the past or make me feel better. I suppose the only good thing to come of it would be for both sides to put a human face on history.
btw - what’s crack-a-lackin, Stereohypers!!??!
How awkward. Even if the guy apologized, the past is past. What he can say now won’t change anything.
I know of one black family who did this and according to one of the daughters it did not go well, to say the least. Granted David Wilson had nothing to do with the poor choices of his ancestors and I definitely don’t think he should apologize for something he didn’t do. However, he is still the beneficiary of years of free labor and the substantial running start it gave his family, I think he should acknowledge that. I’ve thought about this several times and feel that I absolutely would not want to meet the descendants of the people who used to own (or commit attempted genocide against) any of my ancestors. That is unless we come up with a way to sue for back wages. In that case I’ll see them in court! (I am dead serious about this too, I’m suing former owners, traders, governments that reaped taxes, and the chiefs who traded them.)
I would ask if we are in any way related to the founders of McDonald’s or if the Old Mcdonald had a farm song is referring to us. If so i want my cut.
Well looking at the picture, the white David should give black David AT LEAST a couple of acres and a Toyota pick-up truck, if no 40 acres and a mule are available.
I have one word. REPARATIONS.
“can i have some money?”
