Picture it, the women on The View are discussing the dreaded n-word. Whoopi Goldberg is explaining why black comedians use it and why they should be allowed to — she's very frustrated. Elisabeth Hasselbeck doesn't understand. She starts to cry and seems to make the argument that we can't move forward in race relations if black entertainers keep using the word. I roll my eyes. Barbara is uncomfortable and interrupts. If you can't picture it, check out the video after the jump.
why the hell was she crying?!
I seriously cannot stand Elisabeth. She and Star Jones' wedding fiasco are the reasons why I stopped watching the View. Why do we as black people have to have our opinions validated? Why can't it be that someone like Whoopi speaks and is believed? Why must we wait until a white journalist, or a white liberal comedian, or whatever writes a "thought-provoking" book that says exactly what black people have said all along about racial tension and inequity's current existence before white America believes it?
How dim do you have to be to not understand that I can call someone I know a name and have them understand it as a joke, but I wouldn't ever call a stranger that same name cause they wouldn't take it the same way? How stupid do you have to be?
And FOREGONE, I don't know why she crying, either. Is there someone who can explain it to us both?
She's crying because her brain hurts
Elizabitch needs to fuck off and go move to Alabama and hang out with her white trash girlfriends.
I kind of love how Sherri Shepherd doesn't say a word throughout this whole thing — because it would've made this even more embarrassing.
Im glad Whoopies on and Im glad someone sets "light in the head" elizbitch straight. she has no idea what shes saying and I think she just merely repeats what she hears without realizing what it means. Shes a total Barbara (who is soooo boring) ass kisser.
Elisabeth is crying because she and her republican friends can't scare Whoopi away like they did Rosie.
as soon as she starts crying, the conversation stops… coincidence?
Anyone else wish there were some Black folk in the audience to applaud Whoopi?
Now I realize why she started crying! After Whoopi said we don't live in the same worlds it finally dawned on her that *gasps* we live in different worlds!
will this B*** S*** ever stop ?
Listen
The N-Word is not for everyone,
** Black People use the N-Word among each other as a pravite little joke, no one is offended or hurt by it. so what is the problem.
If a white Person uses it, it goes back to the slavery days. and it don't sound right or have the same meaning. I feel whites uses this word when they get mad, upset or to hurt someone….
(I have ask 10 of my white co-workers and of coarse all 10 said they would never use the n-word, BUT, 6 out 10 said if a black person made them upset they would used the n-word to retaliate back just to make them mad - they say it is only fair in a argument/fight).
A lot of Black Parents do not aloud there children to use this word and that is cool too, BUT for the one that do, I feel there is no harm, If & ONLY IF, both parties has the same feeling of this of the N - WORD..
You "people" can't have it both ways! You can say it then I can! Nigger! There!
I CAN'T SEE IT! I NEED TO SEE IT, TOO!!!!!!
*starts sobbing for no good reason whatsoever*
If I was Sherri I would have said "Elizabeth, its a black thing and you wouldn't understand and nor will you ever!!!!"
I use the word as ofter as many black folks do. But we use is like many other common words, as a way to express ourselves.
I wouldn't be surprised if Faux news jumps all over this and depict Whoopi as the liberal, angry black women that hates america, who maid the christian, republican, young, mother of two, all american girl cry. Just because she wanted to make America better by banning the N word. You know they love themselves some Elizabeth at Faux News.
Remember when Elizabeth Hasselbitch sued Law and Order SVU cos they had an episode where a woman named Elisabeth Hasselback, was raped and murdered?
Heh.
lots of people hate her
So why do they keep her on?? Shes annoying, dumb, and fake. Im sure Bill Geddy must get mail from people not liking Elizabitch.
You know what? The white people at my job lovvvvvvve them some Miss Elisabeth. LOVE HER. If I hadn't had conversations with them, I would have no idea how much people love that girl. They say their great aunts send Elisabeth letters of encouragement and baby booties and stuff… you know — to give her strength to say more stuff. Folk love that child.
I happened to catch all of "The View" today and that particular clip was just a snippet of the whole n-word fiasco.
I developed a new respect for Sherri Sheppard today because before that particular snippet, she put her foot down and just told Elisabeth, she just CAN'T say the n-word period. Even the audience was laughing because they saw a different side of Sherri from the lovey-dovey one.
So David H., she did say something. That clip was her counting to ten not to go off on Elisabeth
Who knows why Elizabitch was crying?……….She knew that she can't EVER get rid of Whoopie like she did with Rosie……..
You guys are a bunch of fucking hypocrites. I know exactly what Elisabeth was trying to say and as a black man I feel embrasure by the people who think its ok to say the n word.
Richard- I don't think anyone was arguing that the word should be used. Whoopi understood what Elizabeth was saying, she was merely asking her to understand where she was coming from too. It's great that you understand Elizabeth's point of view, but the issue isn't one sided.
…the inevitable "white woman tears"!!!
it stops every discussion about race, because race doesn't even exist, and its the human race and why can' well all get along??
I think Elizabeth thinks that if we never talk about racism then it will go away. I don't agree with anyone using the N-word though. I think the problem is that whole liberal freedom or speech thing that White people interpret as meaning they have the right to say anything they want to anyone. The real question is why do White people want to say the n-word?
I think White people want to say it 1) Because they want to say something hurtful to Black people, 2) Ignorant White people want to relate to Black people by talking the way they do, or 3) Annoying White people who are obsessed with freedom of speech and believe that if Black people call each other the n-word then that entitles them to call Black people the n-word (I don't know where they get that logic from).
I think Black people want to use the n-word because 1) They want to take back the word so that it loses its racist sting (I think this is faulty logic as well. I think this argument on the View is proof that the ultimate result of this reasoning is that more Black, White, Asian, Latino, and all other people will think its okay to use the word and keep using it. Using the n-word just keeps it alive and teaches it to people who would rarely ever hear it), 2) Ignorant Black people who use the word because they hear other Black people using it. 3) Black people who are insulting or angry with other Black people use the term as an insult.
I think we are all better off not using the word and "brotha" would be a much better word to use.
Im going to agree with her. As much as that hurt to say that. Its not right in public nor private.
It can be used in the correct context (Boondocks)
And Whoopi, who is 'we', because I know you were not talking about me and my people.
It does perpetuated stereotypes and ignorance.
I don't get why she is crying though
more importantly, what the fuck does "embrasure" mean?! hang on… aaaah. i see. i don't get its context, though.
it's funny that elizabeth is the one who is so emotional about this subject, when it only incidentally affects her
They're both right here. Ok, we live in different worlds, and we wish to come to a place where this isn't the case. However for this to happen we cannot freely use the N word in pop culture/the mainstream. For instance, the N word is dropped consistently in Hip Hop music which is mostly bought by young white people, yet when we stop them from using this same word we say "It's a black thing. You wouldn't understand." That's the hypocrisy I cannot get with. Either commit to mending the divide, or do not worsen it by such statements. And um, she's crying because Whoopi scares her.
I can't believe how many people are attacking Elizabeth (who I generally can't stand), for the reasoned pov that the N word is just wrong period.
Whoopie is a fucking idiot. Black comedians using the N word should not be applauded or condoned as something black folk do. People who call each other nigga are the very definition of the word.
There is no reclamation or lessoning of it's power, because black people are saying it. I have ZERO sympathy for black people who cry racism when a white person (or other ethnicity) calls them a nigger, if they see themselves as a nigga.
Why didn't it fly when dog the bounty hunter tried to explain it away that whoopee explained it, and all the black people gave this BS about it being hate and blah blah…but Jessie and Whoopee says it its not hate but it means something else.
Why isn't Whoopee and Jessie looking for a new job right now…. All I hear from the black community is people being upset about it. UPSET!! But for other people even though don't even use the n-word and hint at the hanging or other things they are suspended or lose their show…
If the n-word doesn't have such bite when other black uses it, why go to the extreme and persecute others who uses it, even without intended malice, like private conversations.
As someone who works with inner city kids of many nationalities, I don’t see how words like that as being constructive. We promote positive behavior and treating each other with respect. We are proud to say, the kids in our program are doing very in school and work well with each other. What I hate to see is the crime, violence and drugs these kids are exposed to. These things are not exclusive to any race or nationality. If a child hears something long enough he or she will tend to believe it, that includes the N-word.
Whoopi, Sherri and many others are failing to take a step back and look at how we have historically carried on with many hateful traditions of our former oppressors that have held us back. Seriously, who would have ever thought we'd see a day when black people would argue down a white person for the right to say and be called a nigger?
Exactly!
A white woman weeping over the pain of the N word, while a black woman defends it's use among blacks.
Racism has completely destroyed the minds of some black people.
I don't understand who made Whoopie the judge of words. I guess anyone that wants to use the word should go to her at get her seal of approval. She thought it was okay when her white boyfriend dressed in blackface and made n word jokes a few years ago or when her comic fans do demeaning impressions. I dont understand the double standard.
First of all, I cannot stand Hasselbeck. I want to debate her and tear her a new one- she irritates me, because her logic only goes so far and then falls off a cliff.
Also, the problem as I see it is that the "N-word" is clearly more ambiguous than anyone on either side will admit. The "N-word" leads an interesting double-life; it can be totally good-natured in some situations, but is one of the last true 'fighting' words left. I think when we acknowledge that it is just a word, albeit a mean one with a terrible past, we will reach a point where the word will no longer have the power to hurt that makes it such a tempting weapon for the assholes of the world. The danger of the "N-word" is in the power we attribute to it. People who use the "N-word" to hurt someone else are just choosing the most potent thing in their arsenal.
This is just as naive as thinking that black people can control a word created by slaveholders & co hundreds of years ago to further dehumanize black folk.
I can appreciate its use when it comes to spotlighting racism and for some comedians, that is exactly what they're doing. As real f-ing absurd as the black KKK member piece on the Chappelle show was, it made (some) people think. As controversial as Chris Rock's "black people vs. n-ers" routine was, that had a point. It's as naive as gay people thinking they can repossess the f-word. While I agree that certain people should definitely under no circumstances use it, the real definitive moment is the "privileged" group's reaction when an outsider uses said word. If you're a black person who was up in arms when Michael Richards hurled it at the audience member or a gay person who was signing a petition to fire Isaiah Washington for his use of the f-word, guess what? You've proven that you can't take control of it.
The most frustrating thing about this is the realization that we will never get each other.
I am so sick and tired of the discussion that goes no where. No matter what I say, in the end many white people will just hear me saying that it's a word that they can't use. Truth is, you can use the word. Go ahead. Use it as freely as you want to. You can use it against whomever you want. But you don't.
Do you know why you don't? Because, there is no positive reason under the sun for a white person to use that word in everyday conversation.
If you are saying "nigger," usually you are going to be saying something negative because "nigger" has NEVER been a term of endearment for the white race towards blacks. The word in the mouth of a white person is a slur. The word in the mouth of a black person (nigga) is a term of endearment. And yes, the spelling/enunciation of the word actually does matter.
The concept of this is so simple that it is almost painful. Alas, in the end things will never change. It's sad, but unlike Elisabeth, I am a realist.
Also, I meant to state that it's not a word that I personally use in my everyday vocabulary. In fact, you will only hear me say the word when I am discussing the word in and of itself. I just don't like the sound of it. It's not a word that pleases my ears, nor my soul. But…
At the same time, I am smart enough to realize the reasons why people feel the way that they do in regards to this. Let's face it, black people aren't the only ones who do this. Women will call each other bitches day and night, but at the same time don't want a man to call them one. It's the same concept.
I thought that Chevy Chase and Richard Pryor settled this question on SNL decades ago.
As long as blacks insist that they live in separate worlds from white people, there will always be disparity between the races. No matter how whites may pander to blacks with free scholarships and all-black schools, so long as a black person insists on setting him- or herself apart, you can forget about unity.
What about all this garbage about "one race, the human race" blacks keep quoting? Oh, that's right…it's only when they want something from whites, like education or money. We're all about "one race" or "one world" when we can get something for nothing.
Well, since so many posters and Whoopi Goldberg insist on setting blacks in their own separate worlds, they have no cause to whine when they find white people who agree that they should be separated. Just giving them what they want, right?
I have never said it or associated with anyone who says it. My parents would die before saying it, they heard it enough when they were growing up.
There is NEVER a good occasion to say it; if your comedy needs the "n-word" to be funny, you are obviously not a great comedian.
That word leaves a wound that will not heal until we stop using it.
I could understand Whoopi and Sherry's logic if the "N" word was created within the black race but it was created by the white race to denigrade black people. I would never honor the white race's abuse of my people by using their abusive terminology as a term of endearment to the people they demeaned……………If you are going to error, error on the side of right …….get rid of the word and make up your own terms of endearment that do not have such a hurtful history.
I would have to agree with Bronze Trinity on this one. Because there's freedom of speech, you can't say that only certain people can use a certain word and if you're prepared to say nigger in front of a black, white, asian etc person, be prepared to hear it from them as well (used in the same contexts that you would yourself use it) because you can't claim it as a term of endearment, but then not allow anyone else to endear you. That's bullshit. And at the same time you can't claim that you're redefining the word and taking it from the people who made the word hateful in the first place when you would say to someone, "Nigger, you dumb" or "You're a bitch ass nigger" etc, just as easily as you would say "That's my nigger," or "What's up my nigger." The word it still used in a negative way.
And whoever says that there's a difference between nigga and nigger is a fucking idiot. Just like there's no difference between 'da' and 'the' (same thing different ways of saying it), theres no difference between the a and the er way of saying nigger.
Whoopie, that logic is faulty. Shits not okay, and Elizabeth is only half right, we don't live in the same worlds, but it's 'not okay to say nigger. And all the cats on this board who say it's okay because it's a term of endearment, let a white person come up to you and say it as a term of endearment and see how you feel, and if you have a problem with that you need to rethink your shit.
O Please!!!! Get real people!! Even if black folks did stop using the word. Some other race would still use it to demean and show hatred to black folks.
Take the word colored for example, how many black people do you here using the word? But my grandma used it all the time, it was a term that black folks used commonly in her generation. Now today a man on a reality TV show used it and by the context and the manner in which he used, you just know he meant to demean her.
A word is just a word until you add context, intent, emotion, relationship, etc. White folks can't use the word because of the history. It is just the way it is, sorry I didn't make the rules. My questions to white folks though is really why do you even care how black folks use it?
O yea I forgot the double standard as in the case with Keith Richards. Again it is not a word he should have used and it was used to spew hate.
Is there some police force that stops white people from saying the word? Did I miss something? White people are free to say the word all day long. What they're asking for is to be able to say it and not have people respond to it badly. They want to be able to say it and not have to be accountable for the negative response they get back. I guess they're hoping someone will give them a cookie and smile blissfully in their faces. That isn't going to happen.
I don't usually have this much to say but I do use the word A LOT. Good or bad I just use it as apart of my everyday language, in the right setting of course. Call me what you may, I don't care.
I think I get it now white people are mad because they say why can't they use it, is that what the argument is about, equal rights on the N-word.
It made me think on it for a minute really you can use it, if your heart so desires to use the N-word. BUT BE WARNED! The reaction will definitely be different when you use it. Expect anger, cursing, deragatory words back at you, and maybe violence. Don't like that either? Well maybe this will offer some comfort. That reaction will also be received by those who are black too but use it in a deragatory way(that's right I don't always use it as a term of endearment) or by ANYONE that uses ANYWORD(s) to spew hatred or demean…..Anybody remember the words nappy headed hoes?
i think we can all agree that Elizabitch Hasselbitch needs to fuck off and go away to Alabama where she can be with her fellow white trash hicks.
Elizabeth was crying because she was out of her depth! She used to talking to other undercover racists masquerading as people who are "just being honest". She only hs conversations about race wit other whites and self hating blacks!
I think I can answer why white people don't like to hear that word or at least I will tell you why I hate hearing it. When I hear that word come out of someone's mouth, it is like finger nails on a chalk board. Every time a white person with a conscience hears that word, it is a reminder of all the evil that "our" race perpetrated on another. It is a reminder of how mean and cruel we can be and were. It is almost a punishment every time I hear it. Anyone who says that word be they black or white sound incredibly ignorant.
inevitably white women cry when discussing racism, it is so F@#$ing tired. the thing i like about hasselbeck is that she is so dumb she makes neo-cons look bad. she is D. U. M. B.!!!!!!!
DD, #38 & #39, get out of my head!
Thank you. Your comments on this post gave me the same feeling as Whoopi being on the View — relief.
Even if you don't agree with the word or some people's decision to use it, you must understand the difference between black people using it versus white people's usage.
And Elizabeth is crying because she likes to believe that racism is make-believe or a thing of the past, and Whoopi is killing the fantasy. It's like finding out about Santa. She's most definitely not "weeping over the pain of the N word." Don't make me barf! (Yes, barf.)
Ditto EVERYTHING DD said. Absolutely!
This argument is so tiresome. Why don't folks get it?! At what point did "nigga" become a term of endearment. Slavery has really had long lasting effects, but none more damaging than psychologically. What is so difficult to understand?! White slave owner demeans black slave by calling them nigger. He does everything inhumanly possible to that nigger to show that he's a nigger. Anyone heard of Stockholm Syndrome? That's when a hostage begins to show signs of loyalty to the hostage taker. Let's call this the Nigger Syndrome.
Some slaves began to picture themselves as niggers and other slaves as well…Massa' was right…you juss a dum nigga! Fast forward through the years and we have the same thing. Let's be real. Everything else is so fake in this world, at least we can be real with ourselves. Nigga isn't a term of endearment. Nigga is when your tongue is too lazy to say Nigger. As in…the word is door…you say doe…floor..flo'…and any other English word that becomes "ebonics".
Take it out the hands of the oppressor and do what Whoopee…oppress each other? Terms of endearment…nigga please, bitch nigga, that nigga (baby's father) ain't shit, nigga break yo self, etc. Anyone ever notice that nigga is primarily used in reference to black males. Females, well y'all just black bitches.
Be honest people, we have become mentally strapped to being inferior and not trusting each other. Don't believe me…how about light skin vs dark skin…talking white vs talking black…kinky hair vs straight hair. Fact is, the majority of the time you hear nigga…it ain't good. Folks are so messed up in the head, they don't know the difference. I grew up saying nigga all the time because that is what my environment taught me to appreciate my history. Folks really think they doing something calling folks nigga out of love. Please, stop using that tired excuse to use the word because you don't want to stop using the word.
Elisabeth is full of shit and is running her usual hustle.
I agree w/ everything 76Classic said…as for Elisabeth crying…oh boo hoo honey, it IS a black thing & you will NEVER understand.
^^ Im black. and I do not understand.
It's an ignorant nigga thing.
Thank god I don't understand.
Number 25 is spot on. There are two different issues here. Whether or not anyone should say the N word, and whether or not, as black people, we are offended by different groups saying the N word. While I am sometimes embarrassed when I hear the word used by black people in public (especially in front of white folk)I am not personally offended. When I catch my white friends singing to Gold Digger however, I feel the need to bust heads. White people need to respect what offends us — even if they disagree with what is the best practice. I personally never say the word and never want it said around me by anyone, but if my crazy black grandmother lets it slip every now and again, I certainly am not going to hold it against her.
As many people have said its the basic principal of "what I can say about my mamma you cant say about my mamma." People aren't stupid. They understand this principle. To me, it seems the only reason why certain non black people insist on being able to say this word is because they are racist and would loooove to call out some 'niggaz'. Why on earth would you EVER want to say that word?? I would never campaign to learn derogatory slurs against other people. I dont even want to hear it! I will never get these first amendment types.
Hesselback is right (gag) in that I think the word does bring us down and no one should use it — even you Sherri. However, Whoopi is right in that it is not Hasselback or any other white persons job to tell us what we should or shouldn't say. The point is that they shouldn't need their to be equality in this respect. Whoopi is right. We live in two very different worlds.
Then Blacks have no right to call Whites any of their racist epithets - you know:
redneck
cracker
Opie( What did Ron Howard do to Blacks? Fill me in )
Ofay
Cream in my coffee
White Bread
White BOY
Snow__________
And of course, the most evil one of all, The devil( Evidence to the contrary ), and specifically, the sick Tall Tale that the White race didn't exist until 6,000 years ago, until a mad scientists named Yacub invented us. You owe Whites a BIG TIME apology for that epithet and story.
It's simple. Blacks shouldn't say it, Whites shouldn't say it…end of story. Let the N-word go out of style like the jerk and the jerry curl.
@DK: Yacub? WTF? Never heard that one…
Maybe it's different in other parts of the U.S., but if you called me a cracker, whitey, honky or white trash, I would laugh. Those words mean absolutely nothing to me. I think some white people would get more offended if they heard them from another white person! I can't imagine a black person laughing if I called them the n-word.
And someone tell Kanye write less catchy stuff if he's going to rhyme things with "-igga".
"@DK: Yacub? WTF? Never heard that one…"
If you've heard of the 'Nation' of Islam, you should know that part of the twisted, phony mythologies and beliefs of theirs - even more twisted and phony than Scientology. Only worse,of course, because they're racist against Whites.
I love reading all the slammings of Elisabeth, saying:"I wish I lived in Elisabeth's world, where everything's perfect, and pretty, with with pretty, fluffy bunnies", etc, etc. Well I wish I lived in Whoopi and Sherry's world - far away from the ghettos, living in far better houses and apartments, better living conditions, and so much more, and mostlikely, in neighborhoods or buildings that are majority White( Bet on it! ).
Yes, to be part of their world, where if you feel the slightest bit slighted,or delusionally believe you're being 'disrespected' by someone of a different race, just throw down the Race Card, claim racism . And the person you felt 'dissed' by, gets totally screwed by The System( The same one you believe is racist against Blacks ), and probably loses their job( not show biz'jobs', Real Jobs, Which they most likely could do better than your oh-so talented selves ever do, you're so consistently incompetent than other races ),the media is automatically on your side, and you get all sorts of apologies and goodies as a payoff.
And don't try any of that "Just walk a mile in a Black man/woman's shoes"/ "Try being a Black in America for a day",propaganda, because it doesn't work anymore. Why? Same as playing The Race Card anytime you feel like it.Because( Thanks to White and Jewish traitors/Left Wing Friends-in-High-Places )you've got it so much easier than Whites do now,it is downright evil. Even though,as always happens,it becomes nothing but destructive in the long run - ironically, worse for Blacks,as also always happens, when Whites have to flee when you commit the overwhelming majority of racial hate crimes ,assaults, robberies and rapes against us,leaving you all by yourselves, and the best you can do is Detroit,Zimbabwe,South Africa ( '94 - the present ),Newark,Compton,East St.Louis,New Orleans, Somalia,Rwanda, SUDAN and MAURITANIA( The Black slavery capital of the world !!!! ),and so many,MANY more - which even then, you can't ever admit that maybe it was your fault, that you can't run anything right.
Oh, goody! The trolls are here!
hey, ya know. I sit around with my caucasion friends calling each other "cracka" every other sentance. It's an inside white thing joke. But its just hurtfule when others use it.
It's not about being black or white or brown or the words that are used to decribe them…..we have all suffered, yes some more than others but keeping this wjole thing going 100 years later is just plain stupidity. yes your ancestors were slaves, mine were killed in the haulocost….does that mean I'm any more special than any one else? NOPE. If your gonna use a word amoungst a race, color, religion don't get upset when someone out of your race, color, religion uses it. Its free game at that point. I think people need to grow up. the injustice was not done to you, proceed with your lifes and stop expecting hand outs, I went to war for you, what have you done for me?
No. 59 · Me
"Hesselback is right (gag) in that I think the word does bring us down and no one should use it — even you Sherri. However, Whoopi is right in that it is not Hasselback or any other white persons job to tell us what we should or shouldn’t say. The point is that they shouldn’t need their to be equality in this respect. Whoopi is right. We live in two very different worlds."
I love this comment "its not any white person's job to tell us what we should or shouldn't say"….but its ok for black people to tell us not to use the word? Seriously ignorance y'all..this is all plain stupidity and the whole poor me mentality, my ancestors were treated like dogs so even though I am treated better and have more rights than the majority of any other "color" in the US, have months and channels dedicated to "black people", you still insist onI talking about how different your life is and how horrible a life it was for people uve never even met. Its getting old and a little out of control.
My three year old son was told by a "black child" that he was bad because he was white and he couldn't play with them. My son doesn't even know the difference in color because it's not something I point out, why must you insist on doing it. All it does is prolong the stupidity of ALL OUR ancestors unecessarily.
I am white, blonde haired and blue eyed. I am married to a police officer and live in the South (saying this, I see racism everyday, and it is so much more blatenat in my world). Do I use the n- Word? Uh, NO. Do I understand it from the black standpoint? I certainly think so. The word nigger sounds absolutely horrible to me, and I think of the history that goes with it….I would never want to perpetuate the hate goes with that name. On the other hand, if black people use it in reference to one another, it doesn't affect me. To me it seems like calling somebody known to you by thier nickname. Maybe is it bonding to black folks? Anyway, it seems familiar and not condescening if you are black speaking to someone black. White? Well, I say keep your mouth shut. Honestly, this all seems so trivial. When we all cross over when we die, race won't mean crap; it will be how we lived our lives and treated each other. Oh, and as far as not recognizing color? BS! I can see my color and the color of others - and there are streotypes, glass walls and out-and-out racism that is in your face. I anm not eating a yogurt-eating kid that "sees no color", I am raising a kid that can see the ugliness and limitations of the world, but will try to move past and make things better.
She cried because Whoopi's argument was so clear, lucid, logical and TRUE and as a result the usually opinionated and articulate Elizabeth was at a loss for words. So as not to appear dumbfounded….she cried…PERIOD.
Why teach your child to sterotype the ugliness int he world by ones skin color when you can teach them that everyone is the same and that there is injustice that happens to all races but that they as a person don't have to be a part of it. Teach your kids that its ok to hang around "black people", or "brown people" or "muslims" or "jehovah's witnesses" and instead of pointing out that there are these things teach them we all one in the same, in the end we are all treated the same way.
As far as racism goes, that doesn't just happen to "black people", I see it on a daily basis because I am a white women, who went to war, against my religion, against the belief of this country and against the typical standards of what a female should do, I was severly injured and on a daily basis recieve less care than male soldiers….I understand that that prejudice is there but its something you fight against as a person not as one race or sex or religion…..we all need to come together, live as one adn forget the injustices of the past. Will this happen, nope, because no one get past this, but if we raise our children and they raise their children to see past skin color, religion and sex eventually we can have a collective, happy world….but because people who teach their children its ok to see the color of ones skin and consistently point out that if your skin is this color you get treated this way and if your this religion you get treated this way, and if you see a muslim theyre automatically a terrorist, things will always be the same. There will always be genocide problems, and racism and people trying to win rights for themselves…….
