Weathered journalist Saul Friedman recently dipped his quill into his ink pot, steadied his hand and scratched out this argument: "If race is not an issue in this presidential contest (and I believe it is and will be), then how come virtually every mainstream black columnist has been effusively and unabashedly supporting Sen. Barack Obama, and highly critical of and even caustic towards Sen. Hillary Clinton?"
The rest of Friedman's essay, "Mainstream Black Columnists and Barack Obama," reads how a squinting man with his arms extended outward and his palms turned upward looks. In summation: "What gives?"
"I would expect all these writers to rightly denounce making race an issue," Friedman says at one point, before rattling off a lengthy list of prominent black newspaper columnists who have announced their support of Obama. "But I wonder if their near unanimity has made an issue of race. "Liberal white columnists have not been single-minded," he then posits.
Scathing! Or is it? Newsday's Sheryl McCarthy says no: "I see nothing wrong with that…For about 140 years blacks have been voting for…white candidates…And now there is finally a viable black candidate who happens to be a very strong candidate. Why on earth wouldn’t they support him?"
So, because Obama's the first to do it then why not? Sorry, but if that's the best black columnists can do, we've got to go with Friedman on this one.
Yea, that's a pretty weak argument from McCarthy.
I see this article as white supremacy making itself plainly visible - and shame on you Cord Jefferson for supporting it. Do white journalists write articles about themselves when they universally support white candidates (which they did every election before this one - none of 'em showed Jesse & Al any love)? Do they acknowledge that they are making race an issue? No they don't. They just revel in the comfortof whie supremacy that allows them to continue w/out it being labeled a "race issue" by the mainstream media. I think Friedman's article makes it a "race issue" and a hypocritical one at that. Man, I hate glass house niggas…
I really hope I'm missing your sense of sarcasm here, Cord. Friedman can name some black journalists who are supporting Obama and that makes it a race issue? Wow. I know we all look alike but who knew that knowing five of us allows you to predict for the other 22 million? McCarthy's mistake was responding as though it were a serious statement in the first place.
You are an idiot. Does any of the race baiting by the Clinton campaign, South Carolina, for example give any plausible explanation to hords of African Americans moving over to the Obama ranks? I think so. Before SC the African American vote was evenly split among both majority candidate. Currently, Obama normally wins over 80% of the Afircan American vote.
If not that, then how about how all of Clinton's surrogates Stephanie Tubbs Jones, Bob Johnson and others doing her dirty work to paint Obama as an unAmerican or distort his religious beliefs.
If that is okay with you, perhaps consider the fact that she wanted to seat the delegates in MI and FL???
It was bad enough when your self-hate permeated frivolous entertainment stories but to enter into this arena it is way over the edge.
So I agree with Friedman that race is an issue in this campaign; but not his oversimplication of the situation.
So I my lack of support of Clinton forced me as a staunch Democrat onto Obama's side. Because at the end of the day I love myself and am an advocate of the fair treatment of all and specifically those of my own race.
In conclusion, blacks may not be supporting Clinton because she is not supporting us. Clinton and her surrogates injected race into the campaign and are suffering the consequences.
Lastly, what about the gender question. Clinton touts that rationale at every chance as a reason for supporting her candidacy. Obama has not done the same thing.
4Me,
I'm confused. Who are you referring to?
ARE YOU SERIOUS???????????????????????????????
Race baiting IS going on and it has been initiated by the CLINTON camp! Obama has not been whining about being treated unfairly due to race!!!! Hillary is the one crying like a baby - not to mention using the sex card for all it's worth practically screaming that all women should vote for her!!!! Have you once heard Obama appeal to the Black community for support based on race alone????????? You missed the point of the comment from McCarthy. It was pointing out that blacks finally have a VIABLE candidate do we are supporting him. That does NOT mean the support is due to his race but rather him being a VIABLE candidate and we should be proud! We didn't rally for Jesse because he was Black! Just as she asked us not to vote for Obama out of a sense of pride (as if he was not a viable opponent)I will NOT vote for her simply because she claims to be a Democrat. To quote Oprah, "Don't play me small"! I would not vote for a candidate simply because he is Black as I have never voted for Jesse Jackson but I repeat I will NOT vote for Billary simply because she claims to be a Democrat!
THIS IS SAD! You have joined or maybe surpassed the lows of Stephanie Tubbs Jones.
Look. I don’t get all the whining from the Clinton camp about media bias. When they crowned her the presumptive nominee from “DAY ONE” everything was wonderful, of course! She lost 11 consecutive contests!!! What do you think????????? If it were a major league series there would be no more talk of the under dog! She is a hypocrite. When she was riding the high of Bill Clinton’s stardust she maintained a little class but now the gloves are off!
She has used African Americans against each other in a divisive game of race baiting! I have news for her this is NOT a game and as Obama said this race should be based on the ISSUES!
While I have no problem with whom Tubbs Jones or anyone for that matter, chooses to support (black or white)as it is her prerogative, I find it necessary to point out that using social capitol as a black person to legitimize the use of race or racism to derail another candidate is disgraceful!
I believe it was truly low attempt at fear mongering to INCORRECTLY refer to Senator Obama as being dressed in his native garb in a picture of him visiting Somalia. This is FACTUALLY incorrect as his native garb is MADE IN AMERICA just as he! This was an extremely tacky attempt to promote fear-mongering against her very own people!
It’s time for new leadership (black and white)to dispel the myth that we must feel compelled to accept what we have in the past!!!!
It is amazing how far Billary will go to discredit the Democratic Party for personal gain. I was a true Clinton supporter until they showed their true COLORS! SHAME ON ANYONE WHITE OR BLACK THAT WILL SUPPORT THE TOTAL (BOLD) DISRESPECT BEING SHOWN HERE TOWARD AFRICAN-AMERICANS!
This media game will have zero affect on this Obama supporter. As Bill Clinton stated himself, when you have a choice to vote b/t some who promoting fear and another promoting you to actually THINK for yourself you had better support the candidate who advises you to think. THINK YES WE CAN, AMERICA!
Khia213
I am referring to Cord
@ Me
"Self-hate"? For saying I disagree with the idea that there's nothing wrong with choosing a black candidate over a white candidate as long as he's "viable"? Why not choose the BEST candidate, not just one that's suitable and your race?
I'm not even saying that Obama isn't the best candidate, I'm simply saying that Sheryl McCarthy made a weak argument. Thanks for the ad hominem attack though.
Cord, now you are contradicting yourself. McCarthy's argument clearly indicated that Obama was a VIABLE candidate. Now you are agreeing that choosing a VIABLE candidate is indeed a sufficient reason to vote for a candidate so please explain to me what your problem is?
@ Kim
"Now you are agreeing that choosing a VIABLE candidate is indeed a sufficient reason to vote for a candidate so please explain to me what your problem is?"
When did I say this?
Cord….please just SHUT UP!!! Stop trying to start something!! The author of this article is clearly racist! Who else would bring it up!! Black's have been voting for white candidates for a long time. It's just somebody black now. Deal with it!!1
What in the world?
Coming to Stereohyped and posting venomous comments doesn't do anything to dispel the belief that Obamites have loss their everlovin' minds.
It is disturbing that most (98%) of black journalists can't find fault with Brother Obama. Hell Black folk criticized Martin Luther King. Obama ain't King. He's a POLITICIAN and in my opinion all politicians should be given the side eye.
Some Obama supporters act the like man is Jesus. Ya'll need to realize that Jesus was criticized and questioned, so why can't Obama's feet be held to the fire.
Please stop the madness.
I take it back. The self-hate comment was over the top.
We can both agree that choosing a candidate based upon race is silly. However, I will add that I cannot support a candidate who seeks to marginalize their opponent based upon race. It comes across as self-loathing or at least ignorant to set aside that sort of race baiting.
It is also the fact that you fail to point out these obvious components. Your comments are as myopic and oversimplified as the Friedman article. On this blog, we expect a more full exploration of issues based upon race.
lele19106
I am not a crazy Obama supporter. I am ardently against Clinton.
I don't think the man is Jesus. However, I do not think the tactics of Clinton are forgiveable. It leaves me with only one alernative since I don't want 100 more years in Iraq.
I am willing to take him to task on issues not ignorance. Even McCain said Clinton had more insults than I ideas.
Cord, welcome to the wonderful world of Stereohyped. When it comes to Obama or anything about him - resistance is futile - you must bow down. And please, oh please, don't have an opinion that's anti-Obama b/c you are immediately a self-hating, sell out Uncle Tom or a white operative of the HRC campaign or maybe Hitler reincarnate! Yay!
Why do you hate the troops, Cord? Huh?? WHY???????????????????????????????????????????
Why are so many black Hillary supporters not talking about her race baiting. Its like you are blind and deaf to what we all heard.
Yes Cord, welcome to STEREOTYPED.
Chic Noir, the only race baiting I see comes from the Obama camp, but they call it "pride" over there.
solitaire,
He never mentions race. In fact, it bugs me since he get so much flack about his African heritage…
Please cite a specific example?
blackmistresdiva,
Feel free to be a Clinton advocate just explain to me how you reconcile that with race baiting?
WHY DO THE AFRICAN AMERICAN CLINTON SUPPORTERS REFUSE TO EXPLAIN WHY THEY ARE OK WITH RACE BAITING????????
I am not trying to convince anyone to vote for Obama or anyone else for that matter. I am simply saying that I will never cast a vote for someone that promotes race baiting. Solitaire obviously has PRIDE confused with race baiting! There is a big difference! Obama has not used race black or white since HE IS BOTH for the negative or positive for that matter. Stop derailing the subject and explain why it's OK to support Hillary despite her obvious race baiting and please cite references of Obama playing the race card. Again, race baiting is not OK for ANY race. It's funny how you can use all the issues you have against Obama to deflect answering the question!
You can say Obama supporters think he is God and everything else accept explain how you can turn your back and pretend like you don't see CLinton using US to attack US! With all the educated Obama supporters, somehow I really think they know he is NOT God! It's just another lame tactic Billary suppoters use to throw up smoke screens. I feel sorry for anyone that is not intelligent enough to see it!
One more thing to "Me". Solitaire won't cite a specific example of Obama race baiting b/c he/she CAN'T!
It's just another excuse to avoid the ORIGINAL question.
Even if Solitaire can give you an example, then he/she still should explain why ANYONE should for for ANYONE who does this no matter what color you are.
Black female Hillary supporter and card carrying crab in the barrel here .
I'll be the first to admit that some of Hill's supporters (and Bill) have made bone-headed statements but so have Obama's supporters.
Hill's supporters and Obama's aren't running for president.
Race baiting? Like what?
The MLK statement, that was factually accurate. The Obama supporters racialized it. "We don't want to go backwards." Again true, and again the Obama camp racialized it.
What else do you have?
Kim you sound like the typical frothing at the mouth obamanut, who sees what they want to see.
Yes, there is a big difference between pride and race baiting for most sane folk. Not so much for the obamanuts, who see any criticism of their christ figure as blasphemy.
You can come up with any justification you want, but the majority of blacks who are supporting Obama (blindly), are doing so BECAUSE he is black. That's fine, but to deny it is delusional.
You also go ona and on about Hillarys' "obvious race baiting", and attacks against black people, but I have'nt seen ANY proof you've offered to back that up.
Why are the black columnists around the country baning together to support Obama?
For the same reason its damn near impossible for a black man to break into the "Good ole' boy network."
We live in a country where our skin tone unfortunately divides us more so than our politics can. Thus, this is what you get: blacks who will support a GOOD (let's not leave that out because black people didn't support Jesse and Al in droves when they declared candidacy) black candidate.
Really, is that a bad thing? In this country, I don't think so.
To Lele19106
So Obama's native land is Somalia or Kenya?
And before you come back with that lame old "If he's ashamed of where he is from then he has the problem and you don't"! If that comment was to promote ancestral pride then why wasn't that said? The comment made by Stephanie Tubbs Jones is that Obama was in his NATIVE garb NOT ANCESTRAL and surely she is intelligent enough to know the difference! We are NOT ashamed of our ancestors but the fact is that comment was a blatent attempt to cause fear mongering. BE AFRAID OF THE TALL BLACK MAN IN AFRICAN GARB THAT MAY BE MUSLIM! The comment was made to perpetuate the rumors that Obama somehow is not American and does not love this country the same as the good ole boys! You can't be that naive.
Now again, please cite a specific example of Obama's race baiting.
Solitare, too bad you can't see the bigger picture. Politics aside for a minute - because no candidate is perfect and despite the continued ignorance of repeating it, NO CANDIDATE IS GOD!!!!!!!!!!!! Why support ANY candidate that uses OUR people against US???? This is nothing new. They use us as a pawn and we're supposed to support them when they are done? As I stated several times, color of the candidate is NOT the issue. It doesnt matter which candidate promotes race baiting and fear mongering. I will NOT support it. This is one proud African American woman that will never be used as a political pawn again!
Oh and coincidentally, you still did not give an example of what Obama has done to promote race baiting of ANY race!
i attend school at a predominantly white campus in texas, VERY highly Republican — ordinarily. But even here, Obama won the mock election.
I can't tell you how refreshing it is to be able to talk about him as freely as whites do — namely, without getting accused of voting for him due to his race.
I find it disheartening that in a predominantly black forum that this is the discourse.
lelei 1906,
See comment below:
Said Bill Clinton today in Columbia, SC: "Jesse Jackson won South Carolina in '84 and '88. Jackson ran a good campaign. And Obama ran a good campaign here."
This was in response to a question from ABC News' David Wright about it taking "two Clintons to beat" Obama. Jackson had not been mentioned.
IMO, this quote sought to marginalize the effect of any victory in SC due to race. It bugged me that they compared Obama to Jesse (sorry Jesse). The whole reason the DNC moved up primaries like SC, GA, and AL was to let more diverse voices decide the nominee.
Also, this quote
As for Louisiana, "You had a very strong and very proud African- American electorate, which I totally respect and understand," Clinton said.
Again, they decided that he won because he was black. So what she said to me is blacks voted for Obama just because he was black. The same dumb logic that started this whole debate!
So "solitaire" your candidate was the one citing race pride.
I haven't heard that come from Obama's lips.
I have heard Clinton extensively cite that voting for a woman would represent change. Isn't that argument just as dumb as Friedman's?
This is about standing up against race baiting, NOT about supporting Obama as I have said many times, Solitaire! I have no problem with an African American supporting any candidate they chose, however I cannot support blatant disrespect and disregard against my own people! No one should stand for that. You can love Hillary all you want but it's clear to me that she does not love African Americans. She will destroy anyone and anything that gets in her path on the road back to the White House.
One more thing that Clinton supporters seem to overlook is that this woman has the audacity to claim a victory in Michigan when she knows full well her name was the only one on the ballot. PLEASE TELL ME WHO SHE DEFEATED???? She defeated anyone that suports democracy! Why is she even pretending to be a Democrat if she doesnt believe all the candidates names should even be on the ballot! Of course she won!!!!
Every time Clinton opens her mouth, she all but screams "Vote for me because I am a woman" and that is OK, right???????? "Bitch is the new black"! Not once has Obama asked for a vote because he is Black!
Obama does'nt have to personally use race baiting, when he has a legion of obamanuts doing it for him on a daily basis. I'm sure Tavis Smiley, and his family would have a lot to say about the threats and intimidation they've faced for daring to cast a critical eye on St. Obama.
Btw, where are those examples of Hillary using "OUR people against US"???
I already gave you ONE- Stephanie Tubbs Jones, and you ahven't commented.
So you personally saw these threats to Tavis Smiley? And you know they came from Obama's camp? Please forward me a copy!
I am not an obamanut, though that is a stupid statement.
Solitaire, please respond to the comments I posted from Hilary and her husband's mouth or those of Tubb Jones who stood on the podium with her during her acceptance speach after her latest win. These voices are the ones that have real weight. You just started a whole new discussion instead of completing the one that you encited with me.
BTW, Solitaire Tubbs Jones is black. Look up comments from Bob Johnson and others on your own time.
There are average ignorant and intelligent folks supporting the candidates whose voices carry no real weight.
"There are average ignorant and intelligent folks supporting the candidates whose voices carry no real weight." Referring to Tavis harassers.
Just that so you know. You can be for Obama without being against Hillary. It is possible. I think that all these people feel like they need to attack Hillary in order to make a case for Obama, when that is not true. If you like Obama–then you should just like him. I do, but I also have mad respect for Hillary Clinton.
I am one of the few apparently who saw nothing wrong with Bill Clinton stating that Jesse Jackson won the primary in South Carolina. I knew that Jackson also won in Alaska, Vermont and 4 other primarily white states when he ran, so I did not take it as race baiting. I just saw that Clinton was trying to put the win in perspective.
Stephanie Tubbs Jones example is WEAK AS HELL. You Obamanuts really need to dig a lot deeper, and maybe then you'll hit paydirt. Not today though.
Tavis Smiley certainly knows the effects of an obamanut attack.
Scary.
I'm sorry, but that article is ridiculous, in MY opinion. Where's the article with the side eye to all the women who support Hillary? Clearly they only vote for her because she's a woman.
Right?
Just MY opinion. But, clearly, opinion is LAW. LOL!
What you people fail to realize is I am not obsessed with Obama. In fact, those comments drove me right off the fence to his camp. In fact, I miss Edwards.
I disagree with you "perplexed" since IMO the SC comments sought to marginalize Obama's victory. You don't see Obama saying that Ohio had a proud Casucasion electorate or that women are flocking to Clinton. When we know that 8 in 10 Ohioans said that race was a factor in their decision and we see the results of that election and we know the state is majority caucasion. If he said that things would not bode well for Obama. He would be depicted like Jackson, Sharpton, and etc.
solitaire IMO it's not weak. That comment perpetuated fear purposely. IMO, it sought to remind Caucasions that Obama is black and to be afraid.
They should stick to attacking Obama on policy becase there are holes there instead of that stupid crap….
I'm with "Me"- not obessed with Obama - I'm obssessed with the REAL God and standing up for my race maybe!
Oh and Solitaire, you indicated that my example was weak but once again you are unable to come up with one of your own!!! I guess you will work on it. GOD BLESS!
Now I understand why most of Obama's supporters are educated and Clinton's are not.
Intelligent people must remember not to argue with ignorant people because they will drag you down to their level then beat you with experience every time!!!!!!
I'm out….
Me
Kim I already answered your question, but the kook aid you've been drinking is clearly having a narcotic effect. You are obsessed, and more than a bit scary with your rhetoric.
Btw, what "race" are you actually standing up for? The human one, or the black one? I think we both know the answer to that one.
Tired of ignorance, is'nt it a bit of a paradox to be tired of something you just spread??
Excuse me, didn't Jesse Jackson win SC, AL and LA? Was that a lie? When it came down to it the Obama camp played the race card and won South Carolina also.
As for the African "garb" affair, like Obama said in the debate, I'll take Hill's word that she didn't have anything to do with it. I thought the boohaahaa regarding the photos again was overblown anyway. It's not like the pictures were taken by a secret agent for the Clinton camp and it was a gotcha moment.
These pictures had been around since his trip to Kenya for all to see. So why complain about them being publicized now.
You have no idea what you are talking about. Stephanie Tubbs Jones made the native garb comment AFTER the picture was released as their defense. So while, Obama takes Clinton at her word, that is neither here nor there. Tubbs Jones later commented that he was in his native gard in the photo regardless of who put the photo out.
One FINAL comment to Solitaire, I am part of the Black race and human race. How could I stand up for one and not the other. Your comment makes NO sense!
lele19106
Your exactly right, there is nothing wrong with the photo which is why Obama has never circulated or commented on photos of Clinton or Bush for that matter dressed in the garb of lands they have visited. The point was that the Clinton camp used this photo to promote fear!
I'm out!
Oh Kim, my comment makes perfect sense to rational human being. There is no such thing as a "black race", but we all belong to the HUMAN RACE. Can you wrap your mind around that concept??
Done
Why would the Clinton camp even comment on the photo if they didn't put it out on the first place and it's such a tribute to Obama. Certainly, it is NOT their goal to praise Obama!
If there is no such thing why did you even mention it????????????????????????????????????? U are quite confused! I am black and part of the human race and if you don't get that you need help!
DONE!
Kim I thought you were "out" before??
You do remember declaring you were a part of the "black race" don't you? I simply pointed out to you (quite accurately) that there is only one RACE, and it's the HUMAN one.
If anyone needs help it's you hon.
So glad stereohyped does'nt have an edit comment feature. Haha!
Now you are telling me I can't come back to the site? You run everything, huh? Too busy trying to pick out silly these than to make a valid point!
So you check "human" on applications when it asks your race? African American, Latin American,.. etc.
HA HA! I too, am glad there is no edit feature!!!!!!!!!!!
Why are we ever asked what race we are? We are all part of the human race!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's a given!!!!!!!!!!
African American, Indian American, Latin American, Human American race????? NOT! LOL!
If potential employers ask your race, birth certificates ask for race, even surveys sometimes. Not once have I seen HUMAN RACE on an application???????? What do you select?
But yes, we are all part of the human race! Even those of us who don't actually know what it means.
Hey Cord - Maybe you should just post things about Beyonce? The political stuff is killing you, dude. And, well, it's just not fun anymore.^^
3 insane posts in a row kim??
1. I never said you could'nt come back to this site. I just pointed out that you said you were "OUT". Remember writing that?
2. On aplications I always but "other", since "human" is'nt an option…yet.
3. African American, Latin American,Indian American, Asian American, are socially constructed categories, that mean nothing scientificly.
4. Human is the ONLY race.
Get back on the obamanut bus. You've clearly missed your stop.
The debate of whether to use the term race or ethnic group is a seperate issue and is listed in many ways depending on the source.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Race_(United_States_Census)
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/race
And perhaps I should have corrected your original question (if it mattered) when you asked if I was part of the Black race or human race to point out that my nationality, ethnicity, heritage etc is African American and that I part of the human race but I was more concerned with your ridiculous comments to which you still never cited specific replies but I see now that your expertise is to derail the subject and focus on any other technicality other than the original point!
No one asks white Hillary supporters if they support her just because she is white going against a black man, but as usual it is black people who have to come up with more defenses of their positions than whites. Yet another example of white privilege, in which for whatever reason blacks are put under more scrutiny for their beliefs and preferences. Shame on this author for playing into it.
With very little substantive differences between the two candidates, people are going to vote on things other than the issues. Sorry to break it to you.
Glad to see everyone getting along in my absence!
Wow this topic is on fire.
My people… listen to me, please.
I voted for Obama. I may not have voted for him based solely on his race, but it did play a part in it. I'm not a militant or anything like that, so please don't assume I am.
At the same time, I won't go around attacking somebody who voted for Hilary, or even someone who voted for McCain. Why? Because they may have different values, opinions, and beliefs than I do. And it kind of irks me that Blacks who didn't vote for or support Obama are being verbally attacked, not just here but in other forums. It's small things like this that, I believe, further divide us as a people.
Having a civil discussion on politics is one thing. Name-calling is another, and I say this to BOTH sides.
Okay, vent over.
Wow. Glad I missed the party!
For those for Hillary and her vagina (which is what identity politic she is running on), I suggest that calling people who are for Obama 'nuts', narcotized, having drunk koolaid, and so on, have some issues of their own that aren't a great look.
That is all.
Black love!
Please, Lord, don't let them chase Cord away.
Amen.
This is what happens when the moma bear leaves the children alone with the estranged popa bear, chaos just erupts LOL
