Why Now, Reverend Wright?
Some theories...

wright1.jpgRev. Jeremiah Wright has been widely criticized for what many believe to be "racist" conspiracy theories, most notably one having to do with HIV in the black community. But there are also many conspiracy theories about Rev. Wright concerning why exactly he has decided to speak publicly in such an uncensored way and why right now. Below, check out some popular ones and weigh in on which, if any, hold the most water:

Rev. Wright is a secret Clinton supporter: We all know of his affiliation with Bill Clinton, and some are of the opinion that there is no way he would have said the things he said or acted the way he's acted unless he's rooting for the other team.

The Clinton camp is pulling the strings: It just so happens that Barbara Reynolds, a staunch, devoted Clinton supporter who was seen chatting with Rev. Wright before his National Press Club speech, is a member of the NPC and helped to organize the event.

It's all secretly for the benefit of Barack Obama: This ones been bandied about in the comments section of various blogs. Rev. Wright, knowing that black people would be upset if Obama fully denounced him for no reason and that critics would never be happy until Obama fully denounced him, decided to put on a show that would make Obama completely justified in cutting him off. In short, he sacrificed his reputation and legacy for the greater good.

It's all about Rev. Wright: Rev. Wright is hurt and angry over what he perceived to continuous public betrayals from Obama, and has decided to give him a taste of his own medicine, or, at the very least, speak his mind without regard to how it might negatively affect his former parishioner.

I'll go with #4, Alex.

The first three are absurd. He's an egomaniac, loves the publicity and has a chip on his shoulder about many things, but specifically Obama turning his back on him (as he perceives it).

Look for a book deal soon.

J and BMD,

"Good answer, good answer"!!!!!!!!!!

The words grandiose, ostentatious, and hmm narcissist come to mind!!!!!!!!

To Wright defenders- not for speaking up for himself but for the "extra", particularly in the arrogant and disrespectful manner in which he handled it!!! YUCK! Minister's shouldn't act that way anyway. He is supposed to work for God NOT himself! Did I say yuck? Well, Yuck again!

I would actually respect him if it were #3. Taking one for the team is honorable but no, it's #4.

I'll take number 4…this is the DEFINITION of Crabs in a Barrel. As much as the Black community love to blame white people for our short-comings, it is actually US that holds US back.

@industryfinest: you say…nothing? "Technical difficulties?" IF, are you there?

Theres no conspricacy to this. Thats just a lot of white folks with white guilt trying to place blame on anybody but Rev Wright. Rev Wright has been saying this stuff for over 25 years and no one called him out on it. Thats the real conspiracy. The media also was too busy worrying about the Dixie Chicks statements when Wright was saying the 911 stuff. Why was that? Only fox news was talking about this for over a year. Why did the media pretend that this didn't exist until it snowballed? This is not going away and wait until the media decides to find which dates Obama attended this church. Its sad that a great person like Obama just lost the presidency because of a pesron that he respected so much.

It is a conspiracy. The Clintons knew 25 years ago that Obama was going to run for Presidency in 2008. So, they devised a plan to make him go to this Church and allow Rev Wright to say all these things. They must have told Oprah because she left the Church a few years ago and they probably made Oprah endorse Obama, so he could lose the presidency. Then the Clintons told the publishing company to make up the story about him being his spiritual adviser and then they got his children involved. They told his children to be baptised by rev Wright so this conspiracy would go in effect.
This theory is just as silly as the others. Please stop doing this. This is why we keep failing.

i just don't understand why people are all up in arms over what he said…hell i got it. and i definitely do NOT get why Obama is distancing himself. Rev. Wright is a smart, articulate and educated man. he's eloquent to say the least. and on more than one occasion: totally f'ing right!

Will someone tell me what exactly was offensive about what Rev Wright said …???

America kills and tortures by the millions around the globe. We fund dictators, terrorists, and oppressors. We overthrow democratically elected governments. And it's offensive for someone to say god damn America? God damn America to fucking hell. You have to accept the truth before you can fix the problem.

Definitely #2 and 4. And soemthing else too, ever noticed how it's always the really, really lighted skinned black people, like Wright, who overdo themsleves trying to be as militant and "black" as possible? (Like Alicia Keys recently) They have to overcompensate for their looks and prove that they're black enough and the dark skinned people resent them

Rev. Wright is a lunatic and anybody who thinks he's the only old friend in Obama's closet, wait until the liberal whites elect BO. He not only has a wife who runs a close second to Teresa Heinz Kerry in arrogance, that woman is nasty looking, but Rev. Al, Jesse and Farrakahn will be playing frisbee on the White House Lawn.

@ Hillary

"Nasty looking"? What does that mean? I for one am no fan of Michelle Obama - I just "don't like her". You know how someone just isn't your cup of tea but that doesn't mean they are a bad person. I may even agree about the "arrogance" but nasty looking seems way harsh.

It's ALL about Rev. Wright. I hope Mr. Obama didn't think that Rev. Wright is any of the following:
1. Sane
2. Dispassionate
3. Putting others first
4. Conciliatory
5. Christian
6. Humble
7. Selfless
8. A mentor
My question is, Just how did Mr. Obama have a close, mentored relationship with Rev. Wright for 20-odd years and not notice the lack of any of these traits. Hmmm. Darn. And I wanted him to win the Democratic primary. He'd be so easy for Mr. McCain to beat. Oh well, can't have everything…
