Why Public Radio Doesn't Get Heavy Play in the Hood
Pretty sure I just heard a woman who was discussing the early American art business say of a painting that sold for $200,000, "And that's back when that was real money."
$200k used to be "real" money in the art world. These days you'd be very hard pressed to find a decent piece at that price point. I stopped listening to public radio (NPR specifically) because of the lack of perspectives of communities of color. The turning point for me was when they asked "random people on the street" to characterize George Washington. There were lots of lame references to wooden teeth and murdered apple trees. I personally would have said "elitist, slave raping murderer" but I don't think they were really aiming at a balanced set of views. I don't care for public radio because much the material is culturally unrelatable to me from a racial/ethnic point of view, not necessarily a socio-economic one. I do still enjoy Democracy Now. Amy Goodman is incredible!
What's wrong with saying that? I don't have $200,000 but I know that $200,000 couldn't even buy me a crackhouse in Brownsville Bklyn or pay for 4 years of school at my university alma mater. I wouldn't quit my job if someone gave me $200,000. I think the person was commenting on the value of the dollar (or lack thereof).
@Ali: "Guys! Guys! He had false teeth, killed an apple tree AND he was an elitist slave rapising murderer! You're BOTH right!"
Actually, I'd never heard the slave rapist thing. I thought that was more Jefferson's game, though Sally Hemmings might have just been some consensual action on the side. He said, she said…
As for the art world, yeah, I don't live in there, either. $200K is real money in my world, but not in the art market. There's a lot of stuff that's true in the art world that isn't anywhere else. I interned in a gallery once, and decided I wasn't up for that kind of crazy.
@RWS- Washington had blk children. There are blk families who want a DNA sample to prove that they are related, but his family has said hell no.

I am actually a BIG fan of NPR and public radio in general.
I don't agree with the lack of persectives on communities of color. In my experience, they do a lot. Just yesterday, I was listening to a story that they did on a community driven vacant yard in New Orleans. It was centered around the guys of Creole origin that maintain the lot - but they brought in the voices of everyone in the community to make the story.
And they have done more fair and balanced coverage of the elections and the war than any other news organization that I have come across.
I am in Los Angeles with KCRW and I don't know how I would go through my week without my Chocolate City fix with Garth Trinidad on Saturday evenings.
NPR and Public Radio is a series of stories, people and ideas to promote different perspectives throughout the country and the world. Although it may not apply to you directly, the comment about 200K being real money beack in the day is real talk for some folks.
