Will Smith rejects and denounces rumors that Tom Cruise has recruited him into Scientology's celebrity ranks.
"You don't have to be Jewish to be a friend of Steven Spielberg. You don't have to be a Muslim to be a friend of Muhammad Ali. And you don't have to be a Scientologist to be a friend of Tom Cruise," Smith tells us. "I am a Christian. I am a student of all religions. And I respect all people and all paths."
Is it against the tenets of Scientology to lie to the press? [NYDN]
I wish they would leave Will alone. The media is going to make him be a Scientologist even if he's not. If I were him, I would quit addressing the issue because no one is going to believe him as long as he remains friends with Tom Cruise.
I don't like the guy, but he has a point.
It baffles me that people are still on this mess like Will couldn't possibly have anything in common with Tom so he must be getting recruited? They are both successful movie stars with huge box office appeal ($$$$) and the ability to collectively make some serious business moves within the industry. They both have strong and stylish wives. They're both devoted to their children. They both love doing their own stunts for the adrenaline rush. They've both hung out with Oprah.
I'm sure they have more in common so why can't they just be viewed as friends? Is the concept that strange to the media? They don't attack John Travolta, Kirstie Alley, Jenna Elfman, etc. for being ardent & proven followers of Scientology but they attack Tom Cruise for being the same? I find that a bit odd….
That said, I'm glad Will said what he did because it shows how idiotic this attack on him has been.
