Samuel Snow refused to cash the check that the Army sent recently to compensate for wrongly accusing him and 27 others of rioting and lynching an Italian POW during World War II. Besides Snow, only one other former GI survived to see the checks sent out. Saturday, the Army held a ceremony to formally apologize to the soldiers. The next morning, Snow died — but not before hearing the Army's apology. “He had a smile so big,” his son told the New York Times.
