Young Artists Won The Awards, But Al Green Brought Down The House
BET Awards Recap

akeyswide.jpg

As I watched last night's BET Awards and the time clicked away and I realized that, contrary to the rumors, Beyonce would not be making a guest appearance during Usher's set to sing the "Love In This Club" remix, I began to wonder if my kind thoughts about the ceremony had more to do with it's frequent Beyonce performances than anything else. Usher's opener was shaky — did anyone else catch that flip he did? And most of the performances, although good (and bad; see Keyshia Cole), left me wanting (a Beyonce performance. I have a problem). But things started to pick up considerably when Alicia Keys performed and brought out SWV, TLC, and En Vogue. The whole performance, but especially AKeys, SWV and En Vogue, reminded me of the days when popular musicians could actually sing live and sound good doing it. In other news: Kanye West appeared very humble, Lil Wayne appeared very sober, and Diddy changed his familiar slogan from "Vote or Die" to a more direct "Obama or Die." It was a night of surprises. Also, it was oddly heartwarming to see Rihanna smiling encouragingly as her man feigned sexual relations on stage with Ciara.

The show came together when the Al Green tribute rolled around, with Maxwell (when's the comeback?) singing a fabulous cover of "Simply Beautiful" and Al Green almost literally bringing down the house when he sang "Let's Stay Together." It's rare to see an audience full of famous people of all different ages and different musical genres join together with such unabashed happiness and enthusiasm. Who do black people love more, Barack Obama or Al Green? It's a serious question.

After the jump, tons more pictures. And click here for the winners.

I loved Al Green's performance but did you see Keshia Cole, wow, she could not get it together! I felt bad for the girl. I was at home singing with her and coaching her through the performance, she channelled Britney Spears on that one!

I watched most of the show last night. I TIVO'd it, so I was able to fast forward through parts I thought were terrible. The awards show is definitely more entertaining than most.

As much as I deride BET, I am aware that they are the only channel that will showcase our musicians in this way. What other awards show would bring together Alicia Keys, En Vogue, and SWV? Not MTV or the Grammys, that's for sure. And the Al Green tribute with Jill Scott, Maxwell (goodness!), and Anthony Hamilton? That was pure magic, as was Al's performance afterwards. Where else could you see that?

The Al Green tribute was really good. His performance made it seem like a black family reunion, everyone was on their feet, dancing and singing. It was amazing to watch. The funky divas are back, they looked and sounded good. I wanted more……but SWV not so much. Some might say Tboz sounded bad but she has always had that deep raspy voice. Sorry Usher, Chris Brown out did you last night bro.

I loved that Chris Brown/Ciara segment. It was so sexual without them touching each other. Since I love to dance, it was great seeing the best young male and female dancers performing together. I didn't see the Al Green performance since I don't see the link to it in this post. Where is it?

I love Al Green. I grew up listening to him at my parents footsteps.

My wedding song was Let's Stay Together….nuff said.

As for Maxwell, Most would consider me a stalker:)

So to see Maxwell cover Al Green? Yup, I can die happily now.

And yes, En Vogue still looks great!

i wish Usher would stop trying to compete with these younguns, because he may hurt himself one of these days.

props to Alicia for bringing EnVogue, SWV, and TLC to the stage. it was touching, but almost all of them sounded off key.

did anyone else see Chris Brown vibing to RhiRhi, and look around to see if anyone else was too? from the look on his face, no one else was.

sorry, but you can't sleep on T-Pain either. no matter how you slice it, he ENTERTAINED.

i <3 Kanye

Al Green tribute… FIYAH!!!!!!! Maxwell - yes.

Al Green's performance almost brought me to tears. it was so touching to see everyone in the house united about something even if it was only a song.

i am so glad i tuned in, because BET gets very little play in my household (but that's another conversation).

Usher is 30 if that.
Keisha Cole needs to hook up with Beyince to learn how to sing and dance at the same time while wearing 4 inch stiletoes(tp).

al green was absolutely the highlight of the awards show! everyone else should take notes!

maxwell and anthony hamilton were great! so was en vogue and i thought swv did pretty well, they were lacking in energy though.

all the other performances paled…i didn't think keyshia was that bad at all, but i might be biased because i love her.

big ups to alicia for bringing the girl groups back, that was definitely fun.

all in all, it was pretty enjoyable for me, although that might be because i only watched performances.

I like Keyshia, but it was a little painful…the singing part. Not everyone can sing and dance at the same time.
